About the Authors:
Lesley Corrie – DPhil (Social Work) University of Stellenbosch, 2003 is a practising and professionally registered private social worker and mediator, who has been involved in the field of families and child protection for more than 25 years. Lesley is actively involved in the training and mentoring of social workers and social service professionals, specifically on the subjects of children’s rights and best practice.
Joan van Niekerk – Master’s degree in Medical Science (Medical and Psychiatric Social Work) University of Durban Westville, 1983 has worked in the field of child protection for 28 years and has actively promoted the prevention of child rights violations and abuse. She has considerable experience in working with children in conflict with the law, particularly those who have committed offences against other children. Joan spent 24 years at Childline, she participated in consultations that resulted in the initial drafts of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 and the Child Justice Act 75 of 2008. She is a member of the Professional Board for Social Work and the President of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.
Eric Louw – Dip Legum UNISA, 1984 was appointed to the post of magistrate in October 1975 and has many years’ experience in the child justice courts. He has been involved in the child justice arena since discussions about the Child Justice Act 75 of 2008 began. Eric trains other magistrates on the application of the Child Justice Act.
