Medscheme Appointed Administrator and Managed Care Partner to Sisonke Health Medical Scheme

You are here: Home / Health / Medscheme Appointed Administrator and Managed Care Partner to Sisonke Health Medical Scheme

(MyPR.co.za) May 13, 2026 By //  by pontsho.lintoor@afrocentrichealth.com Filed Under: Health Edit This Article

Medscheme, an AfroCentric Group company and leading health risk management and medical scheme administrator, has been awarded the full suite of administration and managed care services for Sisonke Health Medical Scheme.

The award followed a competitive tender process.

Sisonke Health Medical Scheme provides healthcare cover to employees of major mining groups including Sibanye-Stillwater, Gold Fields and DRD Gold, representing a combined 30 000 principal members and beneficiaries across Rustenburg, West Wits and Welkom.

The Scheme also owns and partners in a network of primary healthcare clinics in Rustenburg, Carletonville, Westonaria and Welkom, serving employees and their communities in key mining regions. Furthermore, the appointment follows a period of significant structural changes within the Scheme, including its merger with Lonmin Medical Scheme. Medscheme has since received confirmation that it has been selected across all tender categories.

The Sisonke partnership reinforces Medscheme’s role in the healthcare landscape and demonstrates continued confidence in its scale, capabilities and operational depth.

Andrew Schwulst, CEO of Medscheme, said the appointment reflects the organisation’s enduring role in South Africa’s healthcare ecosystem and its ability to deliver high-quality integrated solutions at scale.

“Being entrusted with the administration and managed care of Sisonke Health Medical Scheme is a privilege and a responsibility. The Scheme serves employees in one of South Africa’s most important industries, and we are committed to supporting it with clinically driven, digitally enabled and operationally strong solutions that improve healthcare outcomes for members.”

Schwulst noted that the win comes as Medscheme marks 55 years in the South African healthcare sector.

“Medscheme was established on 1 March 1971, a remarkable year in medical history. It was the same year that Professor Christiaan Barnard performed his sixth heart transplant, marking South Africa’s global leadership in medical innovation.”

Today Medscheme administers healthcare cover for more than 4 million beneficiaries, supporting a diverse portfolio of open and restricted medical schemes across South Africa. These include some of the country’s most prominent schemes, serving members across multiple sectors of the economy and a wide range of employer groups.

The Acting Principal Officer of Sisonke Health Medical Scheme Leani Stassen confirmed the appointment and highlighted the Scheme’s focus on governance and continuity.

“The Scheme’s priority is to ensure a stable and well-governed transition that supports the ongoing protection of members’ interests and the effective administration of the Scheme.

Our focus will be to work collaboratively with Medscheme within the Scheme’s governance framework, ensuring appropriate oversight, regulatory compliance, and operational continuity. We look forward to establishing a professional working relationship that supports the Scheme’s strategic objectives and mandate to provide sustainable healthcare benefits to members.”

The appointment supports Medscheme’s long-term strategic ambitions by strengthening its role across the managed care value chain, expanding its presence within high-impact employer-based schemes and advancing digitally enabled healthcare solutions.

Implementation planning is underway, with Medscheme and Sisonke Health Medical Scheme working closely to ensure a smooth transition and continued delivery of healthcare services to members officially from 1 May 2026.
