Mozambique spitting cobra in Shawu’s Hills Lifestyle Estate

South African Wildlife does not only include the Big 5, but also a variety of beautiful species that roam the dense bushveld. Shawu’s Hills Wildlife Estate is home to a variety of reptiles, birdlife, mammals, amphibians, all of which play a crucial role to ecological balance of our precious environment. One such creature is the Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja Mossambica).

Snakes in general hold a high ecological value, as they are both predator and prey; prey to mammals, birds, and other reptiles, and predator to birds, mammals, amphibians, fish and insects. This means they are likely to influence the dynamics of the local fauna. Its presence can affect the behaviour and population sizes of species that interact with it, contributing to the overall balance of the ecosystem.

The Mozambique Spitting Cobra possesses a unique adaptation – the ability to spit venom accurately at the eyes of potential threats at a distance of up to 3 metres. This defence mechanism is effective against both predators and humans. While this adaptation is primarily for self-defence, it can influence the behaviour of potential threats, helping maintain a balance in the predator-prey relationship.

The Mozambique spitting cobra is known to prey on rodents. Rodents are prolific breeders and can have a significant impact on crops and other vegetation. By controlling rodent populations, the spitting cobra indirectly contributes to the balance of the ecosystem and helps protect agricultural areas.

Like many other snake species, the Mozambique spitting cobra moves across various habitats in search of food and suitable environments for reproduction. This movement contributes to habitat connectivity, allowing for genetic exchange among populations and supporting biodiversity.
