Earlier this year, the Mzantsi Jazz Awards Company opened nominations for the Inaugural Mzantsi Jazz Awards, billed as a first for South Africa’s Jazz community. Tonight they will be announcing the nominees at a small announcement ceremony at their Hatfield offices.
“If you are a fan of jazz, you know that South African jazz has grown in leaps and bounds, and we also know that jazz music – even in its richness – doesn’t enjoy the same publicity as its contemporaries in the industry,” Douglas Maximus, representing the Mzantsi Jazz Company, had said earlier this year.
“The MJAs will be an annual event that recognises and appreciates jazz music.” he added.
All the members of media, musicians and other people of interest have been invited to celebrate the unveiling of the nominees, who are said to be “the crème de la crème of the South African jazz community”. After that the line will be open to allow the lovers of jazz to vote for the three public jazz categories: Best Jazz Album, Best Jazz song as well as the Best Foreign Jazz Artist/Album.
The awards will take place on the 11th of August 2017.
