Geographical Location and Map
Namibia is located on the southwestern coast of Africa and is bordered by South Africa to the south, Botwuana the east and Angola to the north. A narrow namibiaapéndice map-eastern tip of Caprivi, Namibia joins Zambia and Zimbabwe. This country has an arid climate heterogeneous territory divided into four regions : the Namib Desert and coastal along coastal plains, the central plateau, overgrown, sloping eastward, the Kalahari desert along borders with Botswana and South Africa, and the dense forest area of northeastern Kavango and Caprivi. The northern area is irrigated by several rivers that supply water to most of the country.
With its 825,118 square kilometers, most of the country is a plateau whose highest point is 2,500 meters, near Windhoek. The most important mountain ranges from south to north are Plateau Kaoko, Damara and the Grand Nama, with altitudes between 1,400 and 2,500 meters. In the north there are several salinas, among which Etosha. The Atlantic coast is occupied by the Namib Desert. Among the most important rivers in the Cunene, Okavango and Orange appear, forming the first two border with Angola, and the last with South Africa.
The Namib Desert, the oldest arid region of the planet, with over eighty million years. It extends along the Atlantic coast of Namibia. The landscapes range from the red dunes of the south to the central plains of the interior and isolated mountains called inselbergs, flat tops and steep slopes. The desert is crossed by several rivers originating in the central plateau but rarely carry water. At this altitude increases Namib dunes and plains give way to gravel. In the North caves and rock shelters in ancient sheltered humans appear.
Flora and Fauna
Namibia has some of the most unique natural habitats in Africa, even in the desert there are elephants, giraffes and zebras. Formerly reached the sea lions, but were expelled from the dunes by poachers. In Etosha National Park in the north, flocks of flamingos inhabit. Reserving Cape Cross seals, on the central coast, blanket hundred thousand Cape fur seals.
Low rainfall significantly influence the field of flora. The steppes are covered with thorny bushes. In much of the country’s most notable plant species are commonly called acacias and tree shiver. However, the landscape is transformed on the banks of large rivers, where the flora acquired great force. Native country is an extremely rare dwarf conifer of about 30 cm. tall, with beautiful yellow flowers. There are fossils of trees more than 200 million years and plants of ancient ages.
