Organized and managed by Blossom Beauty Foundation (BBF), a Johannesburg non-profit organization, the national initiative has grown rapidly in popularity in just under a year of its existence.
A not-to-miss for action minded and health conscious personalities, this year’s edition rides on the success of two well attended previous events – the inaugural edition and the second event, both held last year.
Says Tam de Vries, Blossom Beauty Foundation founder: “This is our national walk, No one should miss it. We are bringing it to Mamelodi for the first time starting from 10am to 2pm the same day.”
We encourage every walkers give minimum donation of R20 – which goes towards giving health to the younger generation. De Vries explained that the Pretoria event will give back to one high school in Mamelodi West – any sport kit of their choice and the hospice in Mamelodi East.
Though She Walks is themed and styled for women, participation is open to everyone in support of women and the youth. Walking for She Walks – it’s for a good cause and invited are groups such as schools, youth organizations, athletics clubs, cultural and sporting bodies, development NGOs, private companies, media and other organizations.
Readiness:
Walkers will find ready a clear and well marked route. A hydration plan powered by Coca Cola for participants includes drinks and water provided at starting point with repeats every two kilometers and water provided by marshals along the way.
Risk assessment was done with the result of low risk, but a local professional assurance company has been placed. The well-known and established St John Ambulance will provide medical attention to incidents of accidents or health risks.
There will be no cooking, no alcohol and the installation of big marquees on the day in line with the environmental plan of the organizers. All water bottles and dirty occurring during the event will be removed immediately after the event by 30 community volunteers.
She Walks – Women’s Walk 2013 is the culmination of thorough planning since October 2012. This covered a number of team events, strategic and management planning meetings. April saw the wrap up of the planning with the introduction of the programme to Mamelodi, followed by a route drive and a site inspection which all signals a promising edition.
