GLORIOUS GLEN GRANT
Whisky lovers can savour some of the world’s top selling single malt whiskies courtesy of Glen Grant during this year’s FNB Whisky Live Festival.
Showcasing whiskies from all around the world, the FNB Whisky Live Festival is the largest, whisky and lifestyle event of its kind and attracts more visitors than any other whisky festival globally. Now celebrating its 10th year, the 2012 FNB Whisky Live Festival has grown from strength to strength and will now be launching a whole month earlier to accommodate a third leg to the show in Durban.
Glen Grant Master Distiller Dennis Malcolm, will personally guide visitors through a magnificent journey of discovery of the Glen Grant portfolio of easy-drinking malt whiskies. The Glen Grant Distillation Zone can be visited at the FNB Whisky Live Festival on 1 and 2 November in Durban and 7 to 9 November in Johannesburg.
Visitors to these classes will be able to taste Glen Grant Major’s Reserve, the 10 year and 16 year olds as well as the award-winning 1992 Cellar Reserve. Glen Grant Cellar Reserve 1992 was one of only 16 single malt whiskies to be awarded Liquid Gold status at the inaugural 2010 Whisky Bible Liquid Awards.
Born on the distillery grounds in 1946, Dennis was destined for a life at Glen Grant. He started his career as apprentice cooper back in 1961 and went on to become one of only eight distinguished Distillery Managers at Glen Grant since 1890.
Since its acquisition by the Campari Group in 2006, the brand has continued to excel. The distinctive taste of Glen Grant has made inroads in the fast-growing single malt Scotch market and has catapulted the brand into the top three in terms of global sales.
Glen Grant continues to maintain the standards and innovations of the Grant family. The distilling methods of James ‘The Major’ Grant, son of founding brother James Grant, are still used to this day with unique tall slender stills and special purifiers that were developed over a century ago giving whiskies a light, fresh character – making the innovative Glen Grant whisky clearly different from any other brand.
The inimitable taste of Glen Grant is achieved through a combination of highland spring water, heat, malted barley and yeast processed with experience and dedication according to centuries-old tradition. After careful maturation in oak casks at the 170 year old distillery, every batch is hand-selected by his expert hand, ensuring the perfect delivery of the seductively smooth taste for which Glen Grant is renowned.
The distinctive pale, golden colour of Glen Grant adds to its visual appeal and its taste profile with crisp fruit, floral and vanilla tones in the bouquet and fruity vanilla accents on the palate sets it apart. The dry, nutty finish gives the whisky a well-rounded, yet immensely drinkable roundedness.
Created using a time-honoured process that has been perfected over generations, each exceptional Glen Grant expression is developed by Dennis.
When asked what in his opion makes a great single malt whisky, Dennis concluded: “Quite simply: Scotland. A superior single malt is the result of the land on which the whisky is produced and takes its ingredients from. A combination of highland spring water, yeast and malted barley, all from Scottish fields, and matured in an oak cask are the unique elements that create a seductively smooth taste, rich, fruity tones and a golden hue. Glen Grant is a perfect example of this.”
