Tetra Pak South Africa will celebrate World School Milk Day in South Africa on September 28, 2016, by visiting Esithebeni Primary School in Soweto to educate about 900 Grade R to Grade 4 learners on the benefits and nutrition of long life milk.
One of the aids in the edutainment programme is the Nutty Professor, a character who reinforces learning by showing, telling, and involving the children in a 45-minute session.
“We aim to get the kids interested to stimulate and reinforce the learning aspect of World School Milk Day so they can rediscover the benefits of fresh milk in long life format,” says Penny Ntuli, communications director at Tetra Pak South Africa.
Learners at the Esithebeni Primary School will receive an activity leaflet they can complete and use to enter a competition to win prizes. The Nutty Professor character will perform no fewer than seven fun “experiments” using milk.
World School Milk Day is a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) day celebrating the health benefits of school milk programmes around the world on the last Wednesday of September.
“The first World School Milk Day was held in 2000 and it has since been recognised in over 30 countries,” says Ntuli. “This is one of the most important and successful days in promoting the importane of drinking milk at school in a fun, memorable, and educational way.”
Last year World School Milk Day was celebrated by children from around the world through information days, quizzes, dances, baking, distributed promotional kits, farm visits, and more.
According to the FAO: “World School Milk Day is an “open” day – people are free to celebrate how they wish. Celebrations can be at any level – from national or regional events to individual schools. Some countries have started in a small way and have organized bigger celebrations with each passing year. Big or small, all have a common goal: to draw attention to school milk and thereby promote its consumption.”
