The Evolution of Music Production and Where It Is Today

You are here: Home / Entertainment / The Evolution of Music Production and Where It Is Today

(MyPR.co.za) May 9, 2025 By //  by Guest PR Filed Under: Entertainment Edit This Article

Electronic music production has come a long way from the days of bulky studio gear, expensive sessions, and gatekept opportunities. “Back in the day, you needed an entire team and professional studio just to lay down a track,” says Sean Phillips, a Electronic Music Production lecturer at Academy of Sound Engineering (ASE). “Now, one person with a laptop can do everything. It’s levelled the playing field in ways we never thought possible.”

While the shift toward accessible, digital tools has opened doors for aspiring artists, it has also brought complexity. From virtual studio technologies (VSTs) and digital audio workstations (DAWs) to AI-generated vocals, music production today is equal parts creative and technical. “Everyone can have Microsoft Paint, but not everyone can paint a Mona Lisa.” says Phillips.

That is where a solid foundation matters, and it is why ASE’s short courses in electronic music production exists. Designed for both beginners and more advanced students, the courses equip students with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving space.
“We cater for both ends of the spectrum,” says Phillips. “Some students have never opened a DAW before. Others have already released music on labels and just want to refine their sound.”

Key focus areas include music theory, sound design, and mastering DAWs. “Music theory is crucial,” You have to understand keys, scales and progressions—those are the building blocks. From there, knowing how to fully use your DAW and design your own sounds sets you apart.”

But knowledge alone is not enough. Passion, patience, and persistence are still the secret ingredients behind success. Today’s generation wants instant results, but there’s no get-rich-quick route here. You’ve got to put in the time. You’ve got to love it.

The rise of AI in music has introduced a fresh wave of innovation and uncertainty. “You can now generate melodies, vocals, and full acapellas using tools like Suno. It’s empowering, but it also raises big questions about copyright and ownership. We’re entering new territory, and it’s both exciting and a little scary.”

It’s no longer just about gigs. It’s about understanding royalties, setting up a label, building a studio, and monetising your music in multiple ways. Artists like Black Coffee and Shimza figured that out early and they turned themselves into businesses.

Through ASE’s short courses, students also gain guidance on how to avoid common pitfalls. “It’s not just technical skills, it’s about knowing how to move smartly in the industry—who to talk to, what to avoid, and how not to get burned.” Says Phillips.
