Early investment strengthens South African fintech group’s financial position, supporting ambitious organic growth and the acquisition of complementary financial services businesses.
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA– Zyra, the South African fintech group building and scaling AI-powered financial services businesses, has secured its first institutional investment of R46 million from Laudian Investment Holdings, with access to a further R100 million, marking a significant milestone early in the company’s journey.
The investment reflects strong confidence in Zyra’s technology, business model, and long-term ambitions. Having rapidly progressed from technology development to commercial launch, Zyra is already revenue-generating and profitable at this early stage. This demonstrates commercial viability alongside strong market demand, providing a solid foundation for its expansion into the broader financial services market.
The group launched its first operational business, ZyraLend, in July 2026. A fully automated personal lending business operating entirely through WhatsApp, ZyraLend received 26,596 loan applications in its first month. Driven largely by organic demand and word of mouth, the response shows strong market appetite and real-world validation of the proprietary technology powering the business.
ZyraLend’s early customer base points to a broad market gap rather than a niche. Within weeks of launch, applications came from all nine provinces and customers aged 18 to 54. A national branch network would normally take years to achieve that reach; ZyraLend did it through a single WhatsApp number. Its short-term loans of up to R8,000, repayable over one to six months, are designed to meet customers’ needs quickly, and existing customers can now apply for top-ups.
Most applicants cited personal or emergency expenses as the reason for borrowing, and these needs seldom arise during office hours. Almost half (48.8%) of customer interactions have taken place outside traditional business hours. This is where Zyra’s proprietary AI technology delivers on speed and accessibility: applications are assessed and processed around the clock, without relying on a branch or call-center model.
Zyra has built its platform to support scalable financial services operations, combining automation with a capital-efficient operating model. While ZyraLend provides the first proof point, the group’s ambitions extend well beyond personal lending, with plans to establish a broader ecosystem of complementary financial services businesses.
“We are very excited to have Laudian on board as a strategic and financial partner. Their backing will help us accelerate our expansion agenda and pursue the opportunities we see across the financial services sector,” says PJ Slabbert, co-founder and CEO of Zyra.
“We believe there is significant potential to improve the way underserved markets access financial services, and that is central to what we are building. We expect to establish a presence in three new markets by the end of 2026 and look forward to working with Laudian as we pursue this next phase of growth,” he says.
Laudian’s investment will support continued technology development, expand Zyra’s existing operations, and drive growth into complementary financial services markets. Alongside this organic growth, Zyra intends to pursue strategic acquisitions and raise additional capital to finance attractive acquisition opportunities.
Chris van Zyl, CEO of the Laudian Group says their investment reflects the company’s strategy of backing businesses where capital and active strategic support can help unlock long-term value. He says there is a strong correlation between Zyra’s technology-led approach and Laudian’s[Cv2.1] existing interests in private debt and technology.
“What attracted us is the combination of a scalable operating model, an entrepreneurial management team, and the opportunity to make financial services more accessible. ZyraLend’s initial market response is encouraging, and we see potential to build on that foundation through responsible lending, continued technology development, and carefully selected growth opportunities. We look forward to working with the Zyra team as it expands its operations and develops a broader financial services offering,” he says.
With a stronger balance sheet and a clear expansion strategy, Zyra enters its next growth phase, positioning itself to become a significant, technology-led financial services group in South Africa, with longer-term opportunities beyond its home market.
