2021 International Lunar New Year Festival

We live in a world with a lot of different cultures, and each culture comes with traditions, rituals, beliefs, and history. The beauty of the world is in how all these cultures come together and find a way co-exist. The Chinese New Year has always been an event that we all need to experience at least once in our lifetime. The festivities of this special occasion have always been fun, colorful and breath taking.

The Chinese New Year is always based on the lunar calendar, which is based on the movement of the moon. The Chinese New Year usually takes place between mid-January and mid-February, the lunar cycle happens every 60 years and the 12-year cycle is regarded as the small cycle and each of the 12-years is represented by an animal and 2021 is the year of the ox.

The Lunar festival represents a new beginning the birth of purity as it always marks the beginning of spring in Asia, seeing plants bloom and birds chirp is always something to look forward too. Being blessed with the opportunity of new beginnings is a blessing that the Chinese community prides itself in.

This year’s Lunar celebration represents so much more than just the beginning of spring or the beginning of a new year, this Lunar celebration represents restored hope, healing, peace, love, and strength” says Erwin Pon- Chairperson of TCA.

The unity of Chinese people around the world has been so great in the past year, that we decided to have a virtual 2021 International Lunar New Year Festival, show the world the connection between Chinese people and hopefully show the world that sometimes sticking together is what we need to do, for the greater good of all humans.

“This year’s event is special on so many levels because we are being hosted by South Africa, a country that is rich in diversity, love and compassion, this event will give the world a chance to learn, see and experience what South Africa really has to offer” says Dennis Woo the Global Executive Adviser of TCA.

We have contributions from continents like America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia and with all these giants uniting you can defiantly expect greatness and class. The showcasing of each continent will really display the authenticity of each.

The 2021 International Lunar New Year Festival is a world first, the Chinese community has never held this event on such a huge scale. The event is virtual, but the main goal has been to create a feeling of togetherness for Chinese people and eventually the world.

About TCA: Many Chinese community organisations have flourished throughout South Africa, but one of the oldest still in existence is The Chinese Association (Gauteng), previously known as the Transvaal Chinese Association. It was formed in 1903 to represent the interests of the approximately 900 Chinese who lived in the province then known as the Transvaal (across the Vaal River).
