Coconut oil has become quite popular recently – and for good reason. While coconut oil offers many fantastic health benefits such as delicate taste and is widely available, coconut oil is also an extremely versatile oil with an array of uses.
At Nuts About Cooking, we came up with 9 clever uses for our coconut oil.
1. Increase your metabolism
Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s). These are fast-absorbing fatty acids that can help you burn more calories. Consuming 15g to 30g of MCTs increased the number of calories expended by 120 on average during a 24-hour period, according to one study.
2. Remove Stains
Stains, such as spills on carpets and furniture, can be removed with coconut oil. Make a paste with one part coconut oil and one part baking soda. Apply on the stain, let sit for five minutes, and then wipe away. Voila!
3. Cook safely at high temperatures
Coconut oil contains a lot of saturated fat. As a result, it is one of the best fats for high-heat cookery, such as frying. Saturated fats, unlike polyunsaturated fatty acids found in vegetable oils, keep their structure when cooked to high degrees. When heated, oils like corn and safflower produce hazardous chemicals. These may be damaging to one’s health. As a result, coconut oil is a safer option for high-temperature cooking.
4. Improves brain functioning
Coconut oil’s MCT’s are broken down by your liver and converted into ketones, which can serve as an alternate energy source for your brain. Several studies have indicated that MCT’s offer significant benefits for brain illnesses such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers advocate utilising coconut oil as an MCT source to boost ketones generation.
5. Moisturises the skin
Coconut oil is an excellent moisturiser for the legs, arms, and elbows. You may even apply it on your face; however, this is not suggested for persons with extremely oily skin. It can also aid in the healing of broken heels. Simply apply a little application to your heels before bed, put on socks, and repeat nightly until your heels are smooth.
6. Might reduce your belly fat
Coconut oil may help decrease visceral fat, which has been related to increased health risks such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. In research done, obese men reduced 2.54 cm of waist fat by consuming 2 teaspoons (30 mL) of coconut oil daily. Another research focused on women who were on calorie-restricted diets. Those who consumed 2 teaspoons (30 mL) of coconut oil per day had a smaller waist circumference.
7. Quick source of energy
Medium-chain triglyceride fatty acids contained in coconut oil are absorbed differently from long-chain triglycerides found in most meals. These fats travel directly from your digestive tract to your liver, where they may be used as a rapid source of energy that does not elevate blood sugar levels.
8. Helps relieve symptoms of Arthritis
Due to inflammation, arthritis causes discomfort and immobility in the joints. According to animal studies, antioxidants called polyphenols present in coconut oil may be able to alleviate certain arthritic symptoms. Treatment with polyphenols from coconut oil decreased edema and many inflammatory markers in rats with arthritis, according to research. However, there is no proof that coconut oil’s lower quantities of polyphenols have the same benefits.
9. Soothes roughed or cracked lips
Coconut oil is an excellent natural lip balm. It applies smoothly, keeps your lips moist for hours, and even gives some sun protection.
