The current round of BASA Supporting Grants reveals the important role of stimulating sustainable arts-business partnerships across South Africa.
Many of the 21 successful projects in the second cycle of this financial year have previously been awarded grants, underscoring the role that the BASA Supporting Grant plays in cementing the relationship between arts organisations and the businesses that sponsor them. Both parties have to be part of the application for a BASA Supporting Grant, with the grants being allocated strictly for marketing and publicity use.
Among the projects awarded in this round are the Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) Awards, which are held annually in celebration of excellence in South African arts, culture and creativity. Together with its sponsors, the ACT Awards were previously awarded a BASA Supporting Grant in 2012, 2013 and 2015. This year’s award will be used for marketing, publicity and advertising for the event, which takes place in October 2016.
Another project being awarded its fourth grant is the Cape Town Carnival, an annual celebration of African identity, diverse communities and cultures and the transformative power of creativity.
Vuyani Dance Company is also a multiple recipient – this time being awarded a Supporting Grant for Joy of Sharing, a musical and dance production, supported by Desklink Media, between Vuyani Dance Theatre, Simphiwe Dana and Wouter Kellerman that takes place in September this year.
“In this current cycle, what has become quite clear is that arts organisations that have previously applied for supporting grants have been able to sustain their previous partnerships with sponsors,” comments Tshepo Diseko, Programmes and Grants Officer at BASA. “In some cases, the arts organisations have been able to grow the financial support they receive from the businesses they’ve engaged with, and that is a great sign for sustainability.”
Once again, this round of BASA Supporting Grants reveals the robust state of arts-business partnerships across the country. From the Mpumalanga Traditional Art Market’s Celebrating Women Artisans exhibition supported by Industrial Development Corporation and Pureau Fresh Water Company, to the 27th Showtime Theatre Awards and Revue/Musical in Port Elizabeth supported by Green Room Design and Communication and Angelic Wonders Events, and the Maboneng Township Arts Experience Festival based in Langa, Cape Town, supported by Cape Town Tourism, the diversity of dynamic partnerships is evidenced in the current projects.
The next closing date for the BASA Supporting Grants is 9 November 2016, with the outcome made available on 25 November 2016.
Supporting Grant applications forms are available in English, isiZulu and seSotho.
Repeat business sponsors applying for grants are required to be members of Business and Arts South Africa (NPC).
The BASA Supporting Grants are made possible through the generous support of the Department of Arts and Culture. For more information and any assistance with your Supporting grant, please contact Tshepo Diseko on tshepo@basa.co.za or 011 447-2295
