As the weather gets warmer and the holiday season looms, it is nearly time for The Big Issue’s annual Collectors Edition.
This year’s edition considers “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow in South Africa”. The Big Issue opened up this theme to some of the biggest names in South Africa, asking them to reminisce about South Africa’s past, discuss the present, and speculate about the future. The deluxe edition will feature pieces from notable people such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Ferial Haffajee of City Press, South African novelist Tom Eaton, iconic artist Proverb, and many other writers, photographers, artists, and leaders.
The extended edition will be full to the brim, as contributors share their personal letters, South African experiences, thoughts and consideration on the future of the nation. It will be available for purchase from November 21 to the first week of January.
As the writers discuss all things South African, the vendors continue to be a large, indispensable part of The Big Issue’s story. A part that strengthens its ties to the Cape Town community. Rather than the usual R20, the Collectors’ Edition will cost R30. But don’t worry, you get more for your money. Not only will readers get more content, but they will also be getting a Time Out guide to central Cape Town, which will be bagged with the magazine.
And of course, readers will also be giving an extra boost to the vendors at a very important time of the year. Because vendors earn 50% of the full sale cost, they will take home R15 per copy instead of the usual R10. While R5 may not seem like much, the bonus will help each vendor through the holiday season.
A registered non-profit, The Big Issue employs marginalized adults from any and all backgrounds as independent vendors. These ca 350 vendors are able to maintain legitimate, sustainable income by earning 50% of the full sale price of the magazine. The magazine, produced by a small but resolute team of journalists, is dedicated to all things South African. Based in Cape Town, The Big Issue was established in 1997 and publishes 12 editions each year. Stories range from hard-hitting and serious, to down-home and quirky.
