Botanist Phumlani Cimi to talk at Kouga Heritage Festival Colloquium

Well-known Eastern Cape botanist Phumlani Cimi will be one of the guest speakers at this year’s Kouga Heritage Festival colloquium.
Cimi has a Master’s Degree in investigating the use of indigenous and wild food plants, works at the Albany museum herbarium and has been in this field for the past 20 years.
The festival will open with the colloquium on Friday, September 26 at ten in the morning.
Cimi will be talking about African traditional medicinal plants.
Growing up in the rural area of Willowsvale in the former Transkei, Cimi would eat indigenous plants such as “Ihlaba” the Xhosa word for Sow thistle.
Ihlaba is a vegetable and can be used as a medicine.
Being exposed to herbs, vegetables and plants from an early age led to him becoming one of the country’s top botanists.
Cimi will be sharing his knowledge about local plants, and the use of herbariums to conserve biodiversity.
The talk is open to the public and entrance is free on a first come-first-seated basis.
The five high schools in the Kouga Municipality have been invited to attend this colloquium.

Running over three days with activities such as stick fighting demonstrations, local music competition, cooking and fashion the festival is being hosted at the Kouga Cultural Centre in Humansdorp.
