Mountain bikers ready for round two at the 2022 Fedhealth MTB Challenge!

Gert Heyns (Stellenbosch) and Keagan Bontekoning (Somerset West) are set for round two when the Fedhealth MTB Challenge takes place at the majestic Blaauwklippen Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September 2022.

Heyns secured the top spot on the podium at the Fedhealth MTB Challenge Marathon in 2021, while Bontekoning finished third.

“I really enjoyed the 2021 edition of the event and love racing on our local trails,” says Heyns. “The Fedhealth MTB Challenge is a well organised event that caters for a wide range of riders. I enjoyed the finish line vibe and festivities. The route features a lot of flowing single track and short steep climbs with spectacular views of the winelands. I have not raced in a while and look forward to seeing how my training has been going. To be able to race on trails that I know well is always fun. My goal is to do my best and hopefully win it again. I would definitely recommend the Fedhealth MTB Challenge to other mountain bikers. It is a great outing for the whole family. The route is great whether you challenge yourself or your friends.”

“I am excited to take part in this event because it is close to home and features some of the best trails in the world,” says Bontekoning. “The Fedhealth MTB Challenge is a great event for the entire family. With the shorter distance (15km) and the Kids Events on Saturday and the longer distances (Marathon and Half Marathon) on Sunday, it’s an awesome weekend out for everyone. Not only does the event feature some of the best riding that Stellenbosch has to offer, but it is also located at such an awesome venue. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to race on routes that are fun but also challenging. My goal will be to win. There will be a strong line-up, but I am excited to take on the challenge. I urge everyone in the area to take on this great event.”

PRIZE PURSE: The 2022 Fedhealth MTB Challenge Marathon (+- 60km) will boast a R30 000 Prize Purse. The male and female winners will take home R7000.00 each, while runners up will take home R5000.00 with the third-place finishers securing R3000.00 each.
