Notes to the editor:
PAMSA was established in 1992 by the pulp and paper industry within South Africa to focus on education and skills development following the closure of Sappi College. Over the years, PAMSA’s mandate has broadened to include other pre-competitive industry-specific issues such as promoting transformation and including historically disadvantaged individuals as well as investing in research and development. PAMSA actively promote ‘the story of paper’, the sustainable management of forests, the renewability of wood fibre and the production of pulp and paper products as an efficient and cost-effective solution to mitigate climate change.
PAMSA and RecyclePaperZA have developed a comprehensive entrepreneurship training course which to date has empowered more than 6,036 informal collectors with the knowledge and skills required to start and run a sustainable small business within the recycling domain. By working with all tiers of government to inform policy, educate officials, and upskill communities, both associations are committed to strengthening the pulp and paper sector.
The paper industry recently submitted its Industry Waste Management Plan as a shared industry perspective on diverting paper, paper packaging and liquid board packaging from landfill. This will be achieved through raising the awareness around separation-at-source, re-use and recycling; facilitating the creation of jobs and businesses and offering training and skills development to people with an interest in the paper recycling sector.
