SOUTH AFRICA — The death of Sky, a Belgian Shepherd and former South African Police Service K9, has deeply saddened animal lovers and members of the public across South Africa.
Sky was found seriously injured while being housed at the SAPS Veterinary Hospital in Roodeplaat. Despite receiving veterinary treatment, the severity of her injuries led to her being euthanised on 9 September 2026 to end her suffering.
Information made public by the South African Parliament indicates that Sky had previously experienced severe anxiety, kennel stress and repeated attempts to escape. Veterinary records reportedly documented concerns regarding her welfare and the risks associated with continued confinement.
The circumstances surrounding Sky’s injuries and death are now the subject of investigations involving the relevant authorities and animal welfare organisations. The South African Police Service has initiated an investigation, while the matter has also been referred to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) and the South African Veterinary Council.
Our thoughts are with Sky
As a South African veterinary directory dedicated to helping people find veterinary services and animal care information, SAVET believes that every animal entrusted to human care deserves compassion, dignity and appropriate protection.
Sky was a working dog who served the South African Police Service. Like every animal, she depended entirely on the people responsible for her welfare.
We support a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her injuries and death and believe that all relevant evidence should be carefully examined so that the facts can be established.
This includes veterinary records, kennel and inspection records, CCTV footage, duty records and any other information that may help establish exactly what happened.
Animal welfare must come first
The circumstances surrounding Sky’s death have understandably generated strong emotions. Beyond the sadness and anger, her story raises an important principle: animals cannot speak for themselves. Those responsible for their care must protect their welfare and act when their physical or psychological wellbeing is at risk.
Veterinary facilities, police K9 units, shelters, boarding facilities and other organisations entrusted with animals all have a responsibility to provide appropriate care, supervision and protection.
Sky’s life had value. Her service and her story should not be forgotten.
We hope that the ongoing investigations will establish the full circumstances surrounding her death and that the lessons arising from this tragedy will contribute to stronger animal welfare practices and greater protection for working animals throughout South Africa.
For Sky.
