HbbTV 2.0 technology supports subtitles for traditional broadcasts as well as live streaming and on-demand content
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 09 September, 2015 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is unveiling a new subtitling format, Hybrid Broadcast Broadband (HbbTV) 2.0, to make live streaming and on-demand content accessible to the hearing impaired.
The technology will be showcased at IFA 2015 in Berlin, as part of the Hbb4All Pilot-A project which aims to widen the delivery of accessibility services.
While sub-titling technologies for traditional broadcast platforms are well established, broadcasters are now challenged with providing subtitles in a format that works on multiple platforms. This requires subtitles to meet the user’s specific needs in terms of channel and platform. To provide accessibility services that are easy-to-use, are of a high quality and work on all platforms offered by on-demand and IP television, broadcasters need a well-conceived production and distribution strategy to exchange subtitles and re-purpose them automatically.
“Samsung is committed to empowering its consumers with accessibility features in across its range to provide the most immersive viewing experience possible,” said Matthew Thackrah, Deputy Managing Director and Head of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Electronics South Africa. “We fully support the Hbb4All project and are deeply grateful for its contribution in making content more accessible to the hearing impaired.”
Samsung has accelerated the implementation of EBU-TT-D based subtitles and is demonstrating its adoption of the HbbTV 2.0 format at IFA 2015. This is the first element of the Pilot-A project as proposed by the Hbb4All project. It is now possible to generate subtitles for live streaming via the Internet. HbbTV 2.0 adds support for EBU-TT-D as a subtitle format (TTML) for broadband content. On-demand content can be linked with out-of-band EBU-TT-D documents and content based on MPEG-DASH can have embedded EBU-TT-D subtitles.*
Current HbbTV terminals do not support subtitles for broadband content. However, they provide sufficient information on the playback position for on-demand content directly to applications, so subtitles can be added in the application. This provides the flexibility needed to offer users customised subtitles, such as larger font sizes.
