Less than half of South Africa’s children play sport – this is according to a 2017 study conducted by the Sports Science Institute of South Africa and with even fewer doing physical education in schools. Steers along with Supersport set out to make a real difference with the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge with the support of key stakeholders including the Department of Basic Education, Sports and Recreation, the Physical Education Institute of South Africa and UNICEF SA.
Globally, less than 20% of children and youth are meeting recommendations for physical activity. The decline in the state of physical education has inspired Steers, a brand that is passionate about youth development, nutritional awareness and physical education, to continue their support of the Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge – a challenge that promotes a more active and healthier lifestyle amongst primary school pupils. Steers continues to support youth development through its sponsorship of various sporting codes under Varsity Sports. However, it saw the need to reach the youth while they are still at an early stage of development to drive within them a passion for playing and imbue a love of sport that will last a lifetime.
“With the vision of fully enabling school children to become more driven, active and successful in their lives, we are very humbled and excited to be a part of this year’s initiative. As the saying goes, a healthy body equals to a healthy mind and we aim to change how physical education is viewed and to make it more accessible, particularly in rural communities,” said Steers Marketing Executive, Adolf Fourie.
After 108 towns were visited and a total number of 108 735 kilometers were clocked in, the Let’s Play Challenge reached its peak on October 27th when Gauteng’s Laerskool Jan Van Riebeek was crowned the fittest primary school in the country. The school will be awarded with an all-purpose, all-weather, multi-use sports facility worth R1.3 million at a handover ceremony in January 2017.
The Let’s Play Phyisical Education Challenge will resume In February 2018.
