When the Dam Breaks, the Community Pays

You are here: Home / Public Issues / When the Dam Breaks, the Community Pays

(MyPR.co.za) August 20, 2026 By //  by Guest PR Filed Under: Public Issues Edit This Article

The Brits tailings disaster raises an urgent question: what happens to the communities around a mine when the water turns toxic?

On the evening of 13 August 2026, the wall of a tailings dam at Samancor Chrome’s Dikwena operation near Brits collapsed. Mining sludge flooded access roads, swept away vehicles, damaged Eskom power lines, polluted a local tributary, and sent chromium contamination fears through the surrounding agricultural land and groundwater. No one died. But the communities around the mine woke up the next morning with no power, compromised water, and no clear answers.

South Africa has been here before. The Jagersfontein tailings disaster in 2022 killed one person, injured 40, and displaced more than 200 residents. The Brits incident is the same failure, different province. The pattern is consistent: infrastructure fails, the surrounding community absorbs the consequences, and the question of where clean water comes from becomes urgent overnight.

This is precisely the gap Damsak® was built to fill. Not only for the mine but also for everyone around it.

Farms, schools, small businesses, and clinics in the radius of a mining operation share one vulnerability: when the local water source is compromised, they have no backup. A sealed, food-grade bladder reservoir holding clean water on site is not a luxury in that environment. It is the difference between operations continuing and operations stopping, between communities having access to safe water and not.

“When a mine’s infrastructure fails, the surrounding community does not get a warning. What they need is water they already control.”

Dawid Bredenkamp, Co-founder and Director, Damsak® Reservoirs

Damsak® bladder reservoirs store up to 500,000 litres of clean water in a sealed, food-grade closed system that prevents contamination from outside sources. They deploy without a permanent foundation, require no heavy equipment, and can be set up as a proactive crisis and continuity measure. For agricultural operations, clinics, or businesses in the path of exactly this kind of industrial incident, that stored water is the only supply not connected to what just failed.

The Dikwena collapse will be investigated, reports will be written, and ministers will visit the site. The communities around Brits cannot wait for any of that. Clean water storage is not a post-disaster response. It is the preparation that changes what a disaster costs.

About Damsak® Reservoirs

Damsak® Reservoirs is a proudly South African, family-run manufacturer of bladder reservoirs, in operation since 2007. The business is owned and managed by father-and-son co-founders Gordon and Dawid Bredenkamp, based in Pretoria and Cullinan. Each Damsak® is built from polyester-reinforced, food-grade plasticised PVC with a closed system that prevents contamination without chemical treatment. Every unit carries a ten-year guarantee. Available for purchase and rental.
