Held on Wed 9 July, the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival Flavours of Knysna served with Tabasco® gourmet evening this year saw some of the best restaurants from Knysna, Sedgefield and surrounds vie for the titles Best Dressed Oyster and Best Dressed Stand.
Judged by a prestigious panel of local and international judges, including Toks ‘n Tjops star Toks van der Linde and MasterChef finalist Sue Ann Allen, the competition was stiff with an awe-inspiring show of oyster preparations and set-ups.
For the Best Dressed Stand competition, Tapas & Oysters claimed victory with their set-up which was a near-perfect representation of the real-life restaurant’s flamboyant beachy shabby-chic style complete with detailed wooden paneling painted in their signature colour red.
For the Best Dressed Oyster competition, Die Gieter Chef Dalene Botha emerged as the victor with her inventive Smoked Oyster Pate wrapped around smoked crocodile and chives served with Tabasco® cavi-art.
Simola Golf and Country Estate Executive Chef Delia Clarke took 2nd place with her uniquely South African take on molecular gastronomy, a Yellowwood smoked oyster served with Tabasco® “caviar” and lemon air.
Conrad Pezula Events Chef & Kitchen Manager Greg Coleman claimed 3rd place with his inventive take on warm coastal oysters, poached in bubbly with dashes of Tabasco®, served in a handmade bamboo boat with pickled forest mushrooms and a potato cloud.
Event manager Sasha Campbell says, “This year’s Flavours of Knysna was really amazing. All 650 tickets were sold out in advance. We had more restaurants and local wine estates participate than in previous years, and I was thrilled to see some of the region’s top gourmet restaurants compete, along with Sedgefield restaurants like Puccis, French Connexion and Pili Pili. It was incredible to see all participating restaurants try to demonstrate this year’s theme, “Naturally Knysna,” in their own unique ways. We were pleased to have local entertainment by DJ Gary White and Brent and Lorette, and attendees raved about the hip, young Spanish guitar performance by CH2. All in all it was a fun night out.”
