Once described as “a flower from Gugulethu”, Yolanda Y’awa, is set to launch her second album at the Alliance Francaise, 155 Loop Street, Cape Town on Saturday September 12.
If you love the sounds of Afro-contemporary jazz, Afro-dance pop, and soul with a touch of fusion and country, you will appreciate Y’awa’s original compositions on her new album Perfectly IMperfect. Her sound is distinctive and engaging.
Y’awa who is a former vocalist with Coda has travelled around the world with bands like Women Unite Marimba Band, Tucan Tucan, and Coda. She has shared a stage with the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi, Freshlyground, Parlotones, Bongo Muffin, Beatenberg and Malaika to name a few.
Y’awa, who is renowned for her passion for South Africa, was invited to perform the national anthem at the test match between Australia and South Africa in 2006, along with Justin Burgh. She has sung at Afrika Festival Wurzburg 2014, Germany and the CMJ Marathon 2014, New York. At home, she sang at many corporate and private events including Desmond Tutu’s 75th birthday.
She says her inspiration as a local and international singer is due to “living in a beautiful city, full of fragrances and sounds.” She is also inspired by her two beautiful children.
Y’awa’s unique mix of talents is an inspiration. She is a singer, fashion designer and motivational speaker – not to mention her formal ballet and African contemporary background. At the release of her latest album in September she will show off a 2016 calendar that she has designed following the theme of Perfectly Imperfect and featuring 12 couture clothing designs under her fashion label, Y’AWA Creations.
One of Y’awa’s passions is to give back to the less priviliged and this has inspired her to donate a percentage of her album proceeds to the Amy Biehl Foundation.
Perfectly IMperfect is recorded at Traxstudio and produced by Riaan Steyn.
Featuring: Like a bird – a song dedicated to her recently passed father; Viva La Shuuja/Unsung Heroes; Bene Sitte/All things beautiful; Take it slower; Perfectly Imperfect; Colourful Love; Spider Spinning; Wanteredza; Smile in your heart; Honeymoon in Zambia; Suddenly and I had a dream.
Y’awa’s amazing voice and high energy are a true expression of the quintessentially strong African woman.
