Longridge Wine Estate continues to garner accolades for the efforts of its winemaking team. Their most recent achievement saw two wines from the award-winning portfolio showing their class by being included in the inaugural Sommeliers’ Selection.
Internationally acclaimed sommeliers David Clarke and Higgo Jacobs presided over the judging panel consisting only of members of the South African Sommeliers Association. More than 400 entries were received, but only 101 wines made the final cut.
The 2013 Longridge Pinotage scored a trophy win in the Elegant/Classy Red category, while the 2014 Longridge Chardonnay was included in the Elegant/Classy White selection. According to vigneron Jasper Raats, the winemaking team is very excited by their wines’ performance in this new competition. “The competition has a completely different slant that will distinguish it from other wine contests and it is definitely encouraging to get such positive feedback from these well-respected sommeliers. We are looking forward to the reaction from wine consumers following our inclusion in this listing,” mentions Raats.
Raats’ experience with Pinot Noir has resulted in a winemaking style that allows the expression of terroir to define the character of this Pinotage. Stylistically, the focus is elegantly placed on the fruit and characteristics of Pinot Noir to create a well-rounded red with soft juicy tannins, an intriguing nose of sweet spices, cassis and black berries, sugared orange peel and raw cocoa with a yeasty savoury character following through onto the palate and finishing with a long and lingering aftertaste.
Earlier vintages of the Longridge Pinotage have been included in the ABSA Top 10 Pinotage list as well as the Top 100 SA Wines and have scored consistently high ratings in the Platter Guide.
