Johannesburg: As artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot become increasingly common in offices, many South African organisations are discovering that AI adoption without clear governance can quickly create operational, reputational, and compliance risks.

College Africa Group (CAG), a South African corporate training provider, has seen growing demand from HR, finance, and leadership teams for structured guidance on how AI should be used responsibly in the workplace.

“Most organisations are already using AI informally,” says CAG Director Arnold Muscat. “The problem is that AI is often introduced without rules, accountability, or alignment to POPIA and internal policies. That’s when AI becomes a liability instead of a productivity tool.”

From AI Hype to Practical Workplace Use

CAG’s AI in the Workplace Training is designed as a foundational programme for organisations that want to:

  • Use AI responsibly and safely

  • Align AI usage with POPIA and internal governance frameworks

  • Improve real business outputs such as emails, reports, administration, and Excel support

  • Keep human decision-making and accountability firmly in control

A core principle throughout the programme is that AI produces language, not truth — meaning outputs must always be reviewed, validated, and owned by people.

Designed for South African Organisations

Unlike technical AI courses, the programme focuses on practical, non-technical use cases relevant to South African workplaces. It is positioned as the first step before role-specific AI training for HR, finance, admin teams, or Excel-based roles.

Training is delivered in a structured, policy-aware format that helps organisations establish clear boundaries before AI use scales across teams.

Responding to a Growing Governance Gap

As AI becomes a board-level discussion, organisations are under increasing pressure to demonstrate that AI use is controlled, ethical, and compliant.

“Responsible AI adoption is no longer optional,” Muscat adds. “Organisations that put governance first are the ones that will see sustainable productivity gains — without exposing themselves to unnecessary risk.”
