Kickstart For EPA Track & Field Season This Weekend At NMU Stadium – Saturday, 20 January 2024

The first Track & Field event will be held at NMU stadium on Saturday, 20 January.

EP Athletics Track & Field Chairperson, Riaan Barnard, confirmed that the track and field pre-season had started in September last year to ensure that the best local athletes can qualify to represent EPA at the National Athletic Championships in March & April 2024.

“We are extremely proud of our athletes,” said Barnard who is passionate about the growth and development of athletics in the Eastern Cape.

From September to the end of November EP Athletics focused on local primary school athletes and selected 72 athletes to compete in Secunda at the end of November.

This competition was a great success to develop our young athletes with many achieving their personal bests.

Medal Award Winners:

• Dean Griebenouw u/9 Gold in the 60m,
• Janco Havenga u/11 Silver in the 100m and
• Oswin October u/13 got Silver in the High jump.

“This weekend will mark the start of our high school, senior and master athletes first league.

“A total of 202 athletes have entered for Saturday’s program and will compete in 278 events.

“All our local athletes are working extremely hard to qualify for the National Athletic Championship which will be held in Pretoria on the 21-23 March for our junior athletes and u/23 (a new category) and then our seniors will compete from 18-21 April in KZN Durban.

“February will be an extremely busy month for our athletes as we will be hosting two full day leagues and 3 short programs to appeal to as many local athletes as possible.

“The short programs are very popular as we focus strongly on developing our local athletes.

“We have also started a short program dedicated to athletes aged 35+ which has been very positively received and we are confident they will be well attended.

“My dream for this season is to develop our athletes to their highest standard to compete on a national level and to bring home more medals!

With the financial support of the Nelson Mandela Bay Muncipality we are hosting two full day leagues and our flagship EPA Championship and the short programs supported by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

Our next two competitions will be held on Saturday, February 3, at the Westbourne Oval and then on February 10, at NMU Madibaz Stadium.

NMBM, the proud host of the EPA Championships, and EP Athletics share the vision to developworld class athletes by creating platforms for local athletes to compete amongst top South African athletes.

Spectators are welcome at the NMU Madibaz Stadium at a cost of R30 per person.
