Pretoria, July 31, 2020: Women make the perfect business owners in the beauty industry, especially if they can follow their passion and have carte blanche over their future direction.
The sense of joy and fulfillment that comes with running your own business is truly empowering. This is the word from Tammy Taylor Nails SA President and Owner, Melany Viljoen.
“If you are going to go into business, it should be in a field you are passionate about if you want the best chance of success,” she says.
As we all know though, success does not happen overnight, however passion will give you the impetus you will need to push beyond the inevitable ups and downs of establishing a business.
It’s rare that people pursue their passion and create a business around it or allow their creativity to assist them in building a business or brand.
Melany believes two of the biggest inhibitors to starting a business are fear of failure or fear of success and being complacent.
“I am fortunate that I have always wanted to start my own business and I am passionate about nails and beauty,” she says. “Turning my passion into business success has been one of my greatest achievements so far.”
Once you get started though she believes many business owners give up too early when the going gets tough or they do not put in the right amount of effort required for success.
What entrepreneurial traits do you need to be successful?
According to Melany due to her experience running her own Tammy Taylor nail salon and building it into a successful franchise group, there are some critical success factors to being a business owner:
- You need a strong desire for success which goes hand in hand with passion for what you are doing.
- You need the determination, resilience, and physical energy to pursue your dream if you are going to overcome any disappointments or setbacks.
- You need to take responsibility for your success and failures. The buck stops with you, even if you have an investor or are part of a franchise, you are ultimately in the driver’s seat. Any mistake is your mistake (even of your employees).
- You need confidence in your ability to make your dream a reality.
- You need self-discipline to be able to work the business plan, look out for opportunities and navigate the uncertainty of a startup business.
Passionate about the beauty industry?
There are plenty of women who are passionate about the beauty industry and there are many aspects of it that stir up excitement.
From personal experience, women understand that in the personal and professional sphere looking your best is essential for success.
If you look your best, you feel at your best and so you envision yourself one step closer to being your best at whatever task you have set before you.
“A fundamental thing to remember here is that in order to make sure your appearance match the qualities you possess and would like to display, most women agree that this all begins with a meticulously well-groomed set of nails,” says Melany.
Many women look forward to starting a business alongside their passion. How? By owning their own beauty salon.
Why? Because they have carte blanche over their future in a world they know and love.
The focus here does not just have to be on nails, expansion is possible.
Your nail salon can include complementary beauty services such as facials, body waxing, lash and brow treatments and a variety of somatology or cosmetology treatments.
Making the decision to open your own salon may be a bit unsettling initially, especially if you have no business experience.
This is where weighing up your options to remain as a single operator of your own salon or choosing to be a part of a franchise comes into action.
Being a part of a franchise does hold several benefits which make success a reality far quicker.
Be advised, not just any franchise will suffice in the long run, research is integral to find brands that share your personal ideals, beliefs, values, and ethics.
One of the foremost brands in the nail and beauty industry is Tammy Taylor Nails SA. The brand stands for excellence in all aspects of the industry.
Started in 1983 by Tammy Taylor herself in the USA, the Tammy Taylor Nail brand has grown exponentially and remarkably fast over time and was brought to South Africa by Melany Viljoen in 2013.
“I knew immediately Tammy was a businesswoman that I could identify with, and that her brand ethos echoed my own,” says Melany. “That synergy between us is what paved the way for a successful business relationship.”
Loving what you do will help you navigate the challenges of business life. It will help keep you focused when faced with distractions which are inevitable in business. If you have the passion, you are already halfway to success!
