ISANDO, South Africa – Hand tools and arbor presses still do a surprising amount of crimping and riveting on South African assembly lines. They work until the order doubles, or until a customer starts rejecting loose rivets and half-closed crimps. MultiPress, a press builder in Isando, Ekurhuleni, builds multi-station pneumatic presses for plants ready to put that step on a controlled machine.
Frames
Two, three and four station presses carry a part through sequential steps under one operator. Bench top builds suit lighter components and short strokes, floor standing frames take larger parts, and there are wide bed, narrow footprint, adjustable height and fixture base variants for lines where space or tool height is awkward. Twin head and dual cylinder presses handle two contact points at once, a transfer slide press moves parts between stations inside one guarded machine, and an angled tooling press covers parts that cannot be reached straight from above.
Force, stroke and the tool that touches the part
Air pressure, bore size and stroke length are set during the build, not left for the end. Too much force marks a part, too little leaves a loose rivet. The tooling is designed from the component outward: crimping tools for terminals and sleeves, riveting tools for mechanical fastening, staking tools for locating parts, sealing tools for pack closures, and nests that hold small or soft components steady.
“Most of the work is in the fixture,” said MultiPress’s tooling designer. “If the part sits the same way every time, the press will do the same thing every time. If the operator has to wiggle it into place, no amount of cylinder force will fix that.”
Guarding and handover
Guarding is chosen for the station. Fully enclosed guarded cells suit repeat production areas, while open loading stations use two-hand control or light curtains so hands stay out of the tool zone during the stroke. Once installed, MultiPress commissions the press with real parts on the line, sets the air supply and stroke, trains operators on loading and controls, and hands over production with the installed tooling.
The workshop in Isando supports factories in Kempton Park, Boksburg, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Gqeberha and East London. Enquiries on the MultiPress website go furthest with a photo of the part and the target cycle time.
