Have you changed your decision making process to include our fellow citizens AND the environment?
As an advocate and supplier of renewable energy through Straton Solar, I am often asked what I recommend in terms of solar with specific reference to loadshedding and our current Eskom woes.
Contrary to what most people think my recommendations DO NOT encompass a laager mentality involving large expense and backup power from Lithium Ion Batteries such as the Tesla Powerwall…
I look at Renewable Energy Investments from different perspectives:
- The Scottish blood in me looks at the solution purely from a return on investment point of view – i.e what is the cheapest most cost effective solution
- The Hippy/Vegan blood in me looks at solutions in terms of what is best for our planet and fellow South Africans
The Scot in me points out that Grid Tie Only solutions have the quickest payback and lowest cost per kWh consumed/produced than all other solutions.
The Hippy/Vegan in me sees that a solution without batteries is the most carbon neutral AND that pushing power back into the grid will help us avoid loadshedding (when enough consumers go that route).
We need to get out of the silo mentality of only making decisions that directly affect us as individuals and begin making decisions based on how our decisions affect our neighbours, our environment and our fellow citizens.
The cost per kWh decision is relatively easy – Grid Tie only will result in an average cost per kWh over the next 20 years of below R0.70 per unit vs a Hybrid (Grid Tie and Batteries) solution costing over R2.00 per unit for the next 20 years.
If I was a tight accountant I know which solution I would settle on AND, without even thinking about it, the cheapest Grid Tie Only Solar Solution is also the most environmentally and socially friendly decision as well.
