Choosing a fragrance you cannot smell is one of online shopping’s harder puzzles, and through the first half of September 2026 Tapputi Egyptian Perfume Oils has been spelling out three of the tools it offers to solve it: the sampler sets that put a broad sweep of scents in a customer’s hands at home, the refill service that keeps its glass bottles in use, and the handful of verified stockists where the range can be sampled face to face before any money changes hands. The South African house sells alcohol free, undiluted Egyptian perfume oils and oil based perfume creams online with nationwide delivery, and these three routes are how it responds to the question it fields more than any other, namely how to pick a scent without gambling on it.
Buying Fragrance Without Smelling It First
A written list of notes can outline a blend, but it will never tell a buyer whether that blend sits well on their own skin, which makes fragrance an uneasy thing to order from a webpage. Tapputi’s response is its Sampler Set, a combo of thirty 2ml perfume oils pulled from across the collection and priced at R999, designed so someone can explore the range over several days at home instead of committing in a single moment at a counter. Buyers ordering one Sampler Set may hand pick the oils it contains, whereas the three set combo comes already assembled.
The Enigma Discovery Layering Set takes a different tack. Rather than maximising quantity, it is organised around selection, allowing the buyer to choose any six oils from the collection, and it speaks to people who prefer to blend scents rather than wear a single one. Combining oils is a familiar practice among oil wearers, and Tapputi frames it as one of the chief arguments for keeping more than one bottle on hand. Set a lighter floral or fruity oil beneath a richer woody or amber one and the result becomes personal to the wearer instead of generic, and the brand is candid that there is no rulebook for how to go about it.
Both sets sit next to the core catalogue of full size bottles, which spans roughly R899 to R1,299 according to the fragrance. That collection holds more than thirty scents for women and men, sorted into fragrance families on the Tapputi website so a shopper can begin from a general leaning rather than a specific name. One group gathers fruity floral gourmand blends and another the mixed florals, with further groupings for floral woody musk, fresh florals and oriental compositions. Among the names are Blossom, Nefertiti, Egyptian Rose, Cherry Aura, Rabiah, Farasha, 1001 Nights, White Oud and Lily Of The Valley, alongside King’s Oud, Al Amir, Black Musk and Desert Dawn on the men’s side. A separate range of Egyptian perfume creams covers the same ground in another format.
Refills Instead of Replacements
Of all the parts of the business, the refill service draws the least notice, and it is precisely the one Tapputi is most eager to spell out this September. Its signature oils arrive in refillable glass bottles, and instead of treating an empty as the close of a purchase, the brand refills it. Pricing is set per fragrance and listed on the refill policy page, starting at R599 for oils such as Blossom, Cherry Aura, White Musk, White Oud, Rosada, Kirei, Dark Gem, Clarise Pink, Magical Fruits and Strawberry Delight, moving to R799 for names including Albi, Darling, Habibti, Nefertiti, Rabiah, Sabine, Bloom, Princess and Black Musk, rising to R899 for 1001 Nights, Farasha, Egyptian Rose, Kings Oud, Al-Amir and Lily Of The Valley, and reaching R999 for Enigma. The single exception is Light Amber Rose, the one bottle in the range that cannot be refilled.
The workings are straightforward and the brand states them clearly. Refills go through the online store only. The bottle must return clean, undamaged and complete with its original cap and applicator, and Tapputi keeps the right to turn down a refill on a bottle that is no longer in good order. Getting the bottle safely to the Tapputi warehouse in Pretoria falls to the customer, return postage is on the customer’s account, and once the bottle lands the process takes five to ten working days before delivery time is added on top. Since each refill is produced to order, a refilled product cannot be returned. Availability also hinges on which oils are in stock, so the service may go on hold for a while as ingredients are sourced.
None of this is difficult, but it is exactly what a customer needs to know before posting a bottle across the country, which is why the policy lives on its own page rather than buried in a product listing’s fine print.
Four Places To Smell The Range In Person
For those who would rather not choose a scented oil perfume off a screen at all, Tapputi maintains a short roster of verified stockists. These are independent businesses stocking their own Tapputi supply, so what is on hand differs from one to the next, yet each has been verified by the brand and each appears with an address, a phone number and trading hours.
Ataliah in Durbanville, Western Cape, operates by appointment only from 5 Barbarossa Street in Sonstraal. Over in Gauteng, Exhibit Gifting and Decor stocks the range at 1159 John Vorster Road in Greenroots, Roodepoort, trading Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Zella’s Creations and Decor can be found at the Glen Village Shopping Centre on North Olympus Road in Faerie Glen, open on weekdays and Saturday mornings. Heavenly Flowers is at 194 Monument Street in Glenmarais, Kempton Park, keeping the longest weekday hours of the four. Together they give shoppers in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, the West Rand, Pretoria East and the East Rand a place to try a scent ahead of ordering.
What Sits Behind The Bottles
Tapputi’s oils are produced in Egypt, made exclusively for the brand by perfumer Hisham Allam, and sold undiluted with no alcohol or added water. That composition is the key technical line between Tapputi’s products and the broader field of oil based perfumes, many of which hold only a small share of oil suspended in a base of alcohol, water and fillers. The brand also casts itself as an original house rather than a producer of designer scent copies, a distinction that carries weight in a market where dupes are everywhere.
The company’s founder is Alishia an Deventer, who spent over a decade in South Africa’s entertainment and corporate worlds before moving into fragrance. Her curiosity took hold when her daughter relocated to Egypt, and she then spent four years studying Egyptian perfumery traditions and forging ties with suppliers there. Work on the brand began in 2018, Tapputi opened in South Africa in October 2022, and Tapputi International Ltd arrived in 2025 to manage the brand beyond the country’s borders. South African distribution is run by Tapputi (Pty) Ltd.
The brand takes its name from Tapputi Belatekallim, a perfumer documented in Babylon around 1200 BCE and widely regarded as the earliest named perfume maker whose record survives in writing. It is an apt nod for a brand whose bottles are meant to be kept and shown off rather than discarded, and it accounts for why the refill service exists in the first place.
Practical advice is published next to the products. Tapputi suggests dabbing a little onto pulse points with the fingers, avoiding hard rubbing, and giving the oil time to settle. Bottles are best kept somewhere cool, dry and away from direct sunlight, with caps shut but not forced too tight, and opened at the neck rather than by the decorative ornament. Delivery is free throughout South Africa, and the company provides a seven day store credit refund for buyers who are unhappy with their purchase.
