The Importance And Challenges Of Financial Inclusion

(MyPR.co.za) April 13, 2023 By //  by kerryo@thelime.co.za Filed Under: Public Issues Edit This Article

The perceived lack of financial inclusion in South Africa has an increasing number of international agencies voicing concern around the number of “unbanked people” and the “high prevalence of cash as a financial medium in the country”. The recent Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey listing can be seen as a clear example of this. According to Amplifin, this is not, however, a problem that can be immediately solved for a number of reasons unique to the South African economy including corruption and a general lack of willingness among South Africans to pay their taxes. “The global transition to a cashless economy is accelerating as more consumers adopt alternative payment systems to cash,” says Riaan de Swardt, Managing Director for Amplifin, adding, “However, this statement is not necessarily true for a defined sector of businesses operating in our country.” “Financial inclusion” is the idea that “individuals and businesses have access to useful and affordable financial products and services that meet their needs – transactions, payments, savings, credit and insurance – delivered in a responsible and sustainable way”. According to the World Bank as many as 12 million South Africans do not have a bank account, and many others have limited access to banking. The World Bank and other organisations have openly stated that it is essential South Africa increases financial inclusion in order to arrest the use of cash, reduce inequality, kick-start financial growth and ultimately establish greater controls of the kind demanded by FATF. According to de Swardt the digital way the first world does business is simply not how most South Africans see money. “The majority of South Africans are not part of the formal economy, once measured against international standards. For them future savings come through stokvels with funeral assistance coming through a funeral parlour (both foreign concepts in a first country economy). Taxis are used for transportation and …

Building communities with sport

(MyPR.co.za) December 20, 2022 By //  by kerryo@thelime.co.za Filed Under: Sports Edit This Article

This December kids have been given an exciting sporting experience as professional, qualified coaches headed into one of the largest townships in Cape Town to run football and netball training clinics. Sponsored by CMTrading these clinics led by South Africa’s number one sports foundation and charity for children, Sporting Chance, had the eager children off the streets and on the sports grounds to hone their athletic skills. In total 65 kids joined the coaches at the Langa Stadium in Langa, tackling, shooting, dribbling and dodging their way to a fun time. CMTrading was the official partner of the clinic which took place from the 12-14 December 2022, both bringing the kids, coaches and a community co-ordinator together and kitting them out in unique branded sports shirts to keep them looking their very best. As part of CMTrading’s official community outreach program the event was a smash success with the children who enthused they would definitely be back next year. For all we know, today’s kids may one day be Cape Town City or Bafana Bafana superstars. Jonathan Bergman, VP of Marketing at CMTrading, said: “We believe that trading is for everyone and likewise so is football. We want to give back to South African communities and what better way than to provide local kids with a safe, active environment in which they can enjoy soccer coaching? We hope to continue our programs and build strong bonds with local communities in the future. Most importantly, we hope each child has a lekker time at our coaching clinics.” For more information on CMTrading, visit their official website at www.cmtrading.com or call +27 10 157 19 89, and one of their friendly staff will assist you. Transformation laws continue to evolve

(MyPR.co.za) December 13, 2022 By //  by kerryo@thelime.co.za Filed Under: General Business Edit This Article

Pabi Mogosetsi, Country Manager for Universum Global South Africa comments on transformation and the EEA. “The Employment Equity Act (EEA) – which prohibits discrimination against employees based on several factors from race to religion, gender to disability and much more, has been amended, with the new laws set out to take full effect in September 2023. (CDH, 2022) “There have been various changes and amendments to the EEA, but many factors remain for discussion. Every company functions as a living organism, with its own ecosystem and various species thriving and working together to make it work for everyone. Just like any organism, each one is different and has unique needs but what essentially makes them function is the company make up which is the people. Understand your people “This year has been either a magical uprising or a tough year. Regardless of how it went, it was a year of learning and building up the people within the company and building together. The people you have will help when they feel like they belong and can express themselves and be themselves honestly without stigma, and with support from their workplace, they can bring their best selves forth (Wellness Survey, Universum, 2022). Diversify “Diversity is the spice of life, paraphrasing W Cowper. With the world changing and updating rapidly, we notice that the longer we wait to decide, the harder it gets to find the solution that assists in building a genuinely robust and magnificent plan. The pandemic assisted many people in identifying various skills that most employees have harnessed or are freshly interested in. Diversifying job roles helps create this spice and helps build a beautiful recipe for companies to develop and be ready. It is time to build relationships beyond industries and beyond departments to create roles that do not dilute but enhance the company image and fill the needs of equally qualified individuals in the company. Your company may have an individual …

Wrap up 2022 and predictions for 2023

(MyPR.co.za) December 12, 2022 By //  by kerryo@thelime.co.za Filed Under: Banking and Financial Services Edit This Article

2022 was the year we will all remember as being the one in which we came out of the pandemic. Fred Razak, Chief Trading Strategist at CMTrading, weighs in on what that really meant and what outlook for 2023 might be. Summarise 2022 “Toward the end of 2021 we began to come out of the pandemic, 2022 was going to be the year we escaped it completely. At the start of 2022, countries were easing border controls and relaxing the coronavirus standards around meetings, and lockdowns. We had all expected 2022 to come out of the gates strong and extend the rally that was being hinted at, at the end of 2021. And it started happening, with all the monetary policy relaxation and funds being flushed into the economy by government, companies started to do well, but they hit a wall when governments started looking to get some of that money back.” “In the end the markets are down for 2022. The question is, how much are they down? Well, a company like JP Morgan, which was trading at $172 went down as low as $100. It has now recovered to about $135, which echoes the same trend as the Dow Jones, which is at a midpoint from its highs and lows. What this means is that people are going to look back at 2022 and say, 'okay, we sold off after the pandemic, and things got bad, but ultimately it wasn't the blood bath it could have been”. “This process of coming out of the pandemic is turning out to be a much longer, but also more gradual process than we had initially predicted and this is reflecting in these kind of middling, stalled bear markets that we are seeing.” Outlook 2023 “For the first half of 2023 we should expect to see traders holding their positions. The market is still digesting the full ramifications of things like inflation and corporate earnings. Just last week Facebook laid off 13 000 workers. Twitter has done 4000. There are a number of companies that are looking at the situation and saying, 'let's preserve our capital and see how far the down turn is'. …

New partnership cements rAge as a tourism destination

(MyPR.co.za) December 12, 2022 By //  by kerryo@thelime.co.za Filed Under: Entertainment Edit This Article

The importance of the rAge expo as a destination for people around South Africa, and now Africa, has been recognised by the announcement that the Gauteng Tourism Authority has come on board as an official destination partner for the 2022 event. With the Intel Africa Masters CS:GO tournament bringing players from around the continent to the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand for rAge, the eyes of Africa and beyond are focussed on Gauteng. By joining in partnership with rAge, the Gauteng Tourism Authority has recognised this vital contribution to spotlighting the area with people who previously may not have considered it an entertainment holiday destination. In addition to being a noted attraction in the region, rAge is also recognised as a business incubator with both Home_Coded and Artist Alley showcasing new and developing South African countries. This exposure to thousands of expo goers is further enhanced through the expo’s media partnership with NAG, who offer these smaller businesses more focused exposure online. “We would like to welcome the Gauteng Tourism Authority as an official destination partner to rAge 2022,” said Project Director for rAge, Michael James, adding, “With a strong partner like the Gauteng Tourism Authority, we stand on the brink of expanding the scope and size of rAge into new markets and making an even bigger impression on all young people interested in technology, IOT, gaming, and geek culture.” Speaking on behalf of the Gauteng Tourism Authority, Sthembiso Dlamini the CEO explained that events of this nature help in cementing destination Gauteng’s positioning as Africa’s premiere home of quality business and lifestyle events. These are not just events, but economic stimulators, catalysts for job creation and growth in a thriving events industry that appreciates and supports all the co-creation partners. We are excited to be formally joining hands with rAge 2022 as the official destination partner and this comes at an …
