Lisa King is an inspiring entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in the art industry. Starting with humble beginnings as a model, Lisa discovered a deep love for the arts that would shape her path. She pursued her passion relentlessly, leading her to travel, work, and study across cities like London, Los Angeles, and Cape Town. Today, she is not only a successful art curator but also a dynamic force in the creative world, blending her expertise in art and entrepreneurship to empower artists and art lovers alike. She began her journey in the creative world at a young age. By the age of 14, Lisa was modelling and eventually internationally too, starring in over 50 commercials and gracing magazine covers around the globe. After years in the spotlight, including a title as Miss Teen South Africa, Lisa decided to broaden her horizons by moving to Los Angeles, where she immersed herself in acting classes and the world of theatre. Reflecting on her time studying Shakespeare with the Juilliard School, Lisa shares, “That experience shaped me. I grew so much as an artist – working with such an iconic institution gave me the confidence to fully embrace my creative journey.” After years of modelling and acting, Lisa felt a calling toward the visual arts. In 2001, she returned to South Africa and established her first art gallery in 2004 in Cape Town’s Cape Quarter. Working alongside her mother, she dedicated 14 years to creating a welcoming space for both established and emerging artists. “My mother and I poured ourselves into the gallery. It was about building a space where people could connect over art, where artists could showcase their work in a meaningful way,” Lisa recalls. This shared vision not only fostered a vibrant community but also helped lay the groundwork for Lisa’s future in art curation and entrepreneurship. During this time, Lisa’s entrepreneurial spirit also came to life with The Lisa King Collection, a women’s footwear brand launched in 2008. …

SA Property Heading into a Brighter Q4
Paul Stevens, CEO of Just Property, offers insights into the market's current state and explores the reasons for cautious optimism. After a challenging 2023, defined by rising interest rates and subdued demand, I was cautiously hopeful for 2024. This prescience seems to have been borne out as the year has unfolded. Unfortunately, unemployment increased by 0.6 of a percentage point in Q2 of 2024, but by August, inflation had eased to a three-year low of 4.4%, which provided the impetus for the Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee to slash the repo rate by 25 basis points to 8% on 19 September. This, along with the possibility of further cuts in November this year and in 2025, a stronger showing by our volatile currency, a projected economic growth increase, and the vast improvement in the stability of energy provision, has raised confidence. BetterBond noted in its September 2024 Property Brief that, quarter on quarter, home loan applications had increased by 6.5%. A growing economy means more jobs, so hopefully, employment figures will soon follow suit. Let’s take a close look at the residential property market and where we are now. House Prices and Market Activity The FNB House Price Index has shown slow recovery in 2024, with annual growth sitting at 0.6% in August. However, FNB forecasts a further 25bps repo rate cut this year and another cut in early 2025. Consequently, the bank has a “slightly more optimistic outlook for buying activity and house price growth in the coming years” and has revised its forecasts upward for 2026 up to 3.6%. I feel that as interest rates continue to decline in the coming year we will start to see more buyers returning to the market as their affordability improves, this is a good time for buyers to get into the market as there are still sellers that have not been able to sell during this tough past year. Rental Market: Strong Growth in Key Provinces On the rental front, the market has shown significant …

Creating Wealth Through Property
Paul Stevens, CEO of Just Property, weighs in on why investing in property can make you wealthier in more ways than one. At a time when more people than ever are renting, current market conditions favour the buyer, and there is a lot of movement happening within the country as people choose to relocate or change their lifestyle owing to changing and evolving workplaces. Investing in property is not just about financial gain; it's about building wealth in various aspects of life. Property ownership can enrich your life emotionally, socially, and environmentally and contributes to your personal growth and lifestyle satisfaction. Here are six types of wealth you should consider when looking at property as a wealth-building tool: 1. Emotional Wealth One cannot put a price on the sense of security and stability that comes with owning a home. In uncertain times, the knowledge that you own your property can provide a sense of well-being and reduce levels of stress and anxiety. While a rental home may feel transient, your own home is a place that you can personalise to your heart’s content, somewhere cherished memories can be created. Peace of mind and the pride of homeownership cannot be underestimated. Studies have shown that homeowners often report higher levels of life satisfaction and self-esteem compared to renters. 2. Community Wealth Homeownership is a step towards putting down roots, building connections and forging the relationships that foster a sense of belonging and support. Neighbours are connected by more than shared walls or fences; they become invested in one another’s well-being. As a homeowner, you have a reason to contribute to the growth, well-being, safety and pride of your community. Engaging in local events and initiatives not only enhances your neighbourhood but also builds a supportive network that can enrich your life. 3. Environmental Wealth Choosing a property also means considering what is important to you in a broader …

In honour and celebration of internationally acclaimed South African artist and sculptor Nicolene Swanepoel (1962 – 2016), the first solo exhibition of Nicolene’s work since her passing will take place in the Swartland at the beginning of November 2024. The exhibition aims to raise funds for causes she championed throughout her life. Nicolene Swanepoel was passionate about art and had a deep love for animals. She earned three degrees in these fields: a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1983, a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1991, and an MTech in Fine Arts specialising in ceramics in 2008. Throughout her career, Nicolene gained international recognition for her work in various mediums, such as pastel, acrylic, and oil painting, silkscreens, and ceramics. Towards the end of her life, she was renowned for her sculptural ceramic pieces, which beautifully portrayed her love for animals and her detailed understanding of their forms and behaviours. Nicolene had received five awards for her collections, both locally and internationally and many of her ceramics have become sought-after collector's pieces. While a more extensive retrospective is planned for 2025, this intimate exhibition will showcase a curated selection of ceramic works discovered in Nicolene's studio after her passing. The serene setting for this exhibition is planned to reflect the spirit in her work and enable visitors to truly meander and take in one of South Africa’s most beautiful regions. Seize the moment: Opportunities in Gauteng’s Residential Property Market
Gauteng's property market presents a mix of opportunities with varying trends across its regions. Despite modest inflation figures, the demand for property remains strong, especially among first-time buyers and those seeking investment opportunities. Lara-Rachel Spronk, Franchise Sales Manager at Just Property Head Office, looks at the current market and the opportunities available. Overall, Gauteng's annual property inflation increased slightly from 0.1% in Q3 2023 to 0.3% in Feb 2024 (with Johannesburg at -1.4%, Tshwane at 0.7%, and Ekurhuleni at 1.7%). Inflation is influenced by a number of factors, not least a legacy of load-shedding and political uncertainty in an election year, so I see these numbers as positive. And it is clear that demand for property continues to be high in Gauteng despite all the focus on semigration. Resale activity in 2023 in Cape Town was 17% of the entire country, but Johannesburg, at 16%, was not far behind. In fact, our Just Property Heritage team had record sales in May 2024, and we have plans to expand further in Gauteng to meet the rising demand. Whether you're a first-time buyer or a seasoned investor, Gauteng's property market holds the potential for substantial rewards. By collaborating with industry professionals, buyers can navigate the market successfully and uncover lucrative opportunities, but there are some important rules to remember. Back to basics Early GenZ-ers are looking to make their first home purchases, millennials are wondering about moving into a larger home or putting a toe in the property investment waters. There are great opportunities in Gauteng, and we’ll get to those, but it’s important to repeat the basics. If you're considering buying a home in Gauteng, know that the Gauteng residential property market is currently a dynamic landscape, presenting both challenges and opportunities for potential buyers and investors. As buying a home is probably one of the most important decisions and …

Understanding residential property ownership in South Africa: Your guide to finding the perfect fit
When it comes to buying a home in South Africa, there's more to consider than just location and square metres. The type of ownership you choose has implications for your budget, responsibilities, and overall experience. Here's the lowdown on the most common property ownership options, plus some insights from property experts to help you figure out what's right for you. Freehold Homes: The Classic Choice What it is: Freehold ownership is when you own both the land and the dwelling itself. This means you have complete control over the property, including any renovations or extensions (sometimes subject to neighbours' approval). Pros: Maximum freedom and flexibility, potential for greater long-term appreciation as land values rise. Who doesn't dream of having their own garden, personalising the social areas, and adding a braai pit? Plus, historically, freehold properties tend to increase in value over the long run. Cons: Higher maintenance costs, as all upkeep is your responsibility. You'll also bear the full brunt of rates and taxes. If you buy property in a gated estate, what you are allowed to do may be governed by the rules of the body corporates. Best for: Families or those needing space to spread out and anyone good with a toolbox (or knows a good handyperson). Noziqhamo Moss of Just Property Port Elizabeth shares, “Freehold properties offer a true sense of independence. If you value privacy and the ability to customise your living spaces, freehold may be the ideal choice." Sectional Title Units: Owning within a Community What it is: With sectional title ownership, you own a specific unit (like an apartment or townhouse) within a larger complex. You also have shared ownership of common areas like gardens, pools, and security systems. Sectional title developments are governed by a body corporate made up of owners. Pros: Lower maintenance costs, as they're split between owners, and everyone contributes via monthly levies. Built-in amenities are a …
