The recipe book, Clover Mama Afrika’s Manna was released in December 2022, as a beautiful tribute to the amazing women of the project. The cookbook is a collection of treasured, traditional South African recipes from the Mama Afrikas themselves. This special book was created for all the Mama Afrikas, with the purpose of sharing their lovely recipes with each other, and to honour these incredible women who passionately care for their communities. The name of the cookbook, ‘manna’ was given with the Mama Afrikas in mind; manna refers to spiritual or divine nourishment. It is widely accepted that these women are the primary caregivers in many communities. To those in their care, Mama Afrikas are a godsend, and their valuable contributions and involvement are like Manna from heaven to the community. It refers to manna for sustenance through the transfer of income-generating skills, and it’s manna for the soul because those empowered by the Mama Afrikas regain a sense of pride, dignity and self-respect as active members of the community. To celebrate our South African heritage, we share the love by sharing their delicious ‘manna’ recipes with the country. This month we share Mama Nondumiso Mpitimpiti’s mutton stew recipe. Mama Nondumiso Mpitimpiti’s delicious mutton stew Ingredients: 1kg Lamb knuckles or leg of lamb cubes 4 - 5 Carrots, peeled and cut into pieces 4 - 5 Medium potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters 1 Onion, chopped 3 Garlic cloves, crushed 400ml Lamb or beef stock 30 ml Worcester sauce 125ml Quality red wine 1 Large tin tomato paste or 2 x sachets 30ml Fresh or freeze-dried thyme 5ml Dijon mustard Salt & pepper Olive oil Method: *Trim off any excess fat, as well as connective tissue, allowing the meat to brown evenly and remain tender. KZN Mama empowers the youth in her community through meaningful connections
Clover Mama Afrika’s Mama Feziwe Gambo from KwaZulu-Natal started her centre, House-Kids Educare Centre in 2010 when she was part of a church community project and saw far too many children under the age of four who were left unattended. She now cares for 357 children between the age of three months and seven years-old at the centre. Her outreach programme also includes caring for 30 elderly members. Her centre is located in Ezimbokodweni in KZN. After the recent Something from Nothing training course, Mama Feziwe Gambo from Amanzimtoti arrived home and was ready to get to work! Since she is keen to use her new cooking skills, her new four-plate electrical hob with glass top she recently received from Clover Mama Afrika came in very handy at her centre. She got to work and prepared all the dishes she’d learnt to make and invited her personnel and family for dinner. For Mama Feziwe, it was wonderful to hear all the compliments on her food, and to share a meal with her staff too of course! “Clover Mama Afrika is pleased to have been able to assist and help Mama Feziwe and we hope to taste her cooking made on the new addition to her kitchen very soon!” says Prof Elain Vlok, Clover Manager, Clover Mama Afrika Trust. Mama Feziwe is very active in her community and makes sure that there is always something happening at her centre. Over the past few months Mama Feziwe did some training with some of the youngsters at her centre and taught them how to bake big cakes and decorate it AND bake biscuits properly too. She always goes above and beyond for the members of her community, making sure that they are learning something that they can implement in their own lives too when they go home. Mama Feziwe is a true role model to those in her community and takes her position seriously wanting to empower the youth that she sees and deals with on a daily basis. She is currently also the chairperson of the Umbumbulu ECD Association with 55 members that she manages (ladies …

Charities don’t only need money in 2023, they need skills!
When we think about a charity’s needs, we immediately think: money. Money that needs to be raised, collected, assigned and responsibly spent. However, hands-on training and skills are just as important to these organisations in order for them to thrive in this economy and environment. Clover Mama Afrika feels strongly about its skills-centred model, where training is prioritised for all their members, better known as Mama Afrikas. Clover Mama Afrika focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty by empowering women who can affect change in South Africa. Which ultimately means seeing communities become sustainable through skills development training in underprivileged areas. “Training and development are critical areas of focus in our project. Many of our courses are new and allow our Mama Afrikas to learn new skills and better themselves, and we also have refresher courses that allow them to practice and refine what they have already been taught,” explains Prof Elain Vlok, Clover Manager, Clover Mama Afrika Trust. “Of course, donations and sponsors are important, but how that money is spent, and how you teach someone to use what they are given, is what defines success or failure. Once-off donations may make a temporary impact, however we prefer to have a long-term outlook, where everything we do is underpinned by the development of a skill which will map an economic course for a Mama Afrika and her project. We find doing continuous in-person training courses with our Mama Afrikas better entrenches the skills development that is taking place. We are able to see how each of the Mama Afrikas are developing, what their strengths and weaknesses are and how they will implement their skills at their own centres. Of course doing face-to-face training also allows for direct questions if someone is unsure or struggling, which means they just learn so much better and faster,” says Prof Vlok. Clover Mama Afrika invests a lot of time and training into their Mama Afrikas and …

Clover Mama Afrika celebrates a successful 21 years!
Clover Mama Afrika is ecstatic to be able to celebrate their 21st birthday and 21 years of success and upskilling! What a blessing it is to be able to celebrate 21 years and still be going strong and making a difference in the lives of others. Inspired by possibility, in 2001 Clover embarked on a journey of identifying female pillars of strength in South Africa’s communities, and appointed the first Clover Mama Afrika Mama in 2003, with Prof Elain Vlok, Clover Manager, Clover Mama Afrika Trust, vigorously spearheading the initiative. Endearingly called “Proffie” by colleagues, friends and her Mama Afrikas, Prof Vlok founded one of the most awarded CSI projects in South Africa. Her aspirations were simple: • To have a Clover Mama Afrika in every community • To break the cycle of poverty by empowering women who influence change • To see underprivileged communities become sustainable through skills development training • To witness the transfer of skills from one community member to another • To spread the core values of Ubuntu The project’s success of the past 21 years in numbers: • 202 – the number of training opportunities Prof Vlok provided to more than 1 900 training beneficiaries • 8 500+ – the number of individuals who skills were transferred to • 142 – The astounding number self-help projects founded • 11 700 members were positively affected by skills transfer • 442 fellow members have received skills from Mama Afrikas • 1.5 million children and over 25 000 elderly have been positively impacted over the past 21 years • 56 Mama Afrikas – the number of female community leaders successfully appointed across South Africa “We are so grateful for the 21 years we have been able to make a difference to every one of our Mama Afrikas’ lives, by upskilling them and in thereby allowing them to lift up their communities. Of course this would not be possible if it wasn’t for our caring and giving sponsors who stand by us every step of the way and …
