Joburg Tweetups launches in Soweto on Youth Day

[Wednesday, 13 June 2012] This Youth Day the first ever Joburg Tweetup takes place in Soweto. The event hosted by Internet evangelist, Ramon Thomas, takes place on Saturday, June 16 at the renowned Wandies Place starting 1pm. We invite you to join this special occasion, raising awareness of the extraordinary power of social media among to youth of South Africa’s largest township. Joburg Tweetups have grown to over 400 members since launching in 2009. Many of the members are among the most influential or Twitterati like Melanie Minnaar, the founder of Twitter Blanket Drive and Bruce Mubayiwa, the LinkedIn Coach, both speaking at the #YouthDayTweetup. "Tweetups are social meet-ups where we get together and chat about Twitter and how we use in our daily lives," asserts Ramon Thomas, the new organiser of Joburg Tweetups. "The key to networking is meeting people and establishing trust, honesty and respect. Tweetups are the perfect platform for formal networking and informal networking." To grow Tweetups we add value to Twitter users by providing a safe and fun environment for them to meet, chat, laugh and network. THE 8TH VODACOM FUNNY FESTIVAL – BAXTER THEATRE 11 JUNE – 8 JULY

The Vodacom Funny Festival which runs at the Baxter Theatre from 11 June to 8 July presents a selection of award-winning acts of the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, together with best of local comics and a number of newcomers. The bill includes a host of international comedians, some new names and numerous local stalwarts of the industry. The Festival, now in its eighth year has run at capacity since inception. Some 20 000 comedy lovers are expected to fill the 30 performances. The Funny Festival has developed its own brand of comedy which is strong in specialty acts with a difference. The foreign contingent is headed by Londoner Kev Orkian, whose memorable performances at last year’s Funny Festival, have resulted in a recall. Kev was voted “Best Musical Comedian” at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has since been in huge demand all over the world. He returns with a new show. Mombasa born and UK raised comic Imran Yusuf, who was awarded “Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival” joins the cast. Imran’s multi-cultural background makes him an interesting comedian with a large fan base. His appearances on the Michael McIntyre Show and hard work ethic have landed him his own BBC TV show. Imran is destined to be a hit at the Festival. The Boy with Tape on his Face hails from Christchurch New Zealand, but his international acclaim and performance on the Royal Variety Show 2011 has made an international celebrity performer. He is the popular face of the Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney Comedy Festivals and the recipient of numerous international awards. Japanese comedians, Gamarjobat join the cast. The duo are winners of many awards at Festivals in Asia and Europe, the “kings of silent comedy” are so unique they are difficult to describe. They present a physical comedy master-class which develops into a perfectly choreographed feast of visual jokes. Local tourism website receives warm welcome in China

JUNE 4TH - THE NELSON MANDELA Bay Tourism (NMBT) foray started on a high note with high profile media coverage when it successfully launched its mandarin website (http://www.nmbtcn.com) in Beijing and signed letter of intent with the General Secretary of Asia Art Expo (also known as Asia Arts Top Show) during their visit to the country as part of the South African Tourism (SAT) China workshop entourage. The website's launch forms part of NMBT's strategy in marketing the city during their ten day visit to the country from June 3rd to 12th. The objective of signing the letter of intent is to develop an exchange programme between artists and creating an international awareness of Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB). "The launch was extremely well attended" said an excited NMBT CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile from Beijing yesterday (subs: Wednesday). "This is the time and place to further our city's exposure on an international capacity - the Mandarin website is just the first step of achieving this. By translating the website content into Mandarin it has made Nelson Mandela Bay and its offerings just that much more accessible to this audience, and is a proof of our ongoing commitment to grow the city's presence in the Chinese markets." she added. CCTV, China's largest television station, along with the state owned internet news website, Xin Hus, and many others, covered the event extensively. "Workshops like this create a number of opportunities for NMBT to market our wonderful city's treasures. It is a platform for building international relationships with significant tourism bodies from around the world.
