Demolition plays a crucial role in dam maintenance by facilitating the repair, renovation, or removal of structures to ensure the dam’s integrity, safety and functionality. Years of applied demolition research has enabled Jet Demolition to offer an integrated approach to dam rehabilitation. Over time, dams can develop structural issues such as cracks, weakened spillways or compromised foundations. Demolition of damaged sections allows for the safe removal of deteriorated materials, making way for repairs or replacements. For example, partial demolition of a spillway may be necessary to replace it with more durable materials or to upgrade its capacity. Dams built decades ago may not meet current safety standards or operational requirements. Demolition of outdated components such as control gates, overflow structures or auxiliary buildings is often necessary to modernise the dam. This process enables the installation of new technologies such as automated control systems or enhanced flood control measures. Hybrid solutions are developed to suit specific, on-site conditions while protecting the structural integrity of the remaining concrete. Rehabilitation of dam walls usually requires demolition of redundant portions of monolithic blocks. “Judicious selection of demolition methods and their application techniques are vital to a controlled and productive project,” comments Kate Bester, Contracts and Project Manager at Jet Demolition. In certain instances, explosive demolition may be possible and appropriate. Various drilling and coring methods are then applied to generate blast holes of pre-determined depths, diameters, and alignments, in strict accordance with our in-house blast-design, where the nature of the works to be undertaken warrants controlled blasting of spillways and structural elements. Detonation causes both shock wave and gas penetration energy transfer to concrete structures. Therefore, it is critical to ensure physical separation of the …
Latest Additions to the Most Advanced Demolition Equipment Fleet in Africa
Leading specialist Jet Demolition is the first demolition contractor in Africa to implement the OilQuick automatic quick coupler system for its fleet. It allows hydraulic work tools to be connected and disconnected effortlessly from the driver’s cab. In addition, the operator can change seamlessly between various work tools within seconds, from a hydraulic hammer to steel or concrete shears, sorting grapple, hydraulic magnet, bucket or even a machine-mounted crusher. Bradley Slooten, who has a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management, is Equipment Asset Manager at Jet Demolition and dealt directly with the OilQuick factory in Sweden. “They were very surprised to hear that a demolition contractor in South Africa has the fleet capacity to adopt their system.” While there are various quick coupler systems available locally, this is a first for the South African industry in terms of automation. A factor that influences any successful demolition job is the versatility of the equipment on-site, explains Bradley. Generally, an excavator on a civils or earthmoving site has a specific attachment, either a hydraulic hammer or bucket, for its entire lifespan. However, a demolition site often sees a machine carry multiple attachments within a working day. The time it takes to change an attachment with a conventional pin system generally is two to three hours. Jet Demolition discarded this outdated technology about 15 years ago, developing its own in-house mechanical coupler system that reduced the time to change attachments to about 45 minutes. However, with demolition projects becoming increasingly fast-track and cost-driven, Bradley embarked on the next step to improve fleet efficiency. Developed and manufactured in Sweden, the OilQuick fully automated hydraulic coupler system allows the operator to change between various demolition attachments in a matter of seconds. The system makes use of the excavator’s own hydraulic system, which moves the lock pins to couple …

Overnight Bridge Demolition Highlights Impressive Precision and Planning
In an impressive feat of precision and planning, Jet Demolition recently carried out the overnight controlled demolition of the Rockdale Road Bridge, a vital step in the N3 highway and EB Cloete Interchange upgrade. The bridge demolition forms part of a critical large-scale project, undertaken by SANRAL. Running from August 2024 to July 2025, it includes construction of a new bridge designed to accommodate additional lanes on the expanded N3, a key transport artery. The upgraded highway will significantly improve traffic flow and safety for commuters. “The biggest challenge we face with rapid overnight bridge demolitions is the tight timeframes imposed by road closures and the planning demands and project costs associated with them,” highlights Johann Weinmann, Structural Engineer & Project Manager at Jet Demolition. In the case of the N2 and N3 highway upgrade projects in KwaZulu-Natal, most bridge demolitions are completed under total motorway closures, typically between from 18:00 on a Saturday and 05:00 on Monday. “Beyond the extensive hourly lane penalty, you can only imagine the chaos and economic losses that would arise if the N3 highway between Pietermaritzburg and Durban was only reopened late on Monday evening instead of early in the morning as scheduled,” notes Weinmann. During these projects, the requirement to reopen highways promptly is non-negotiable for Jet Demolition. The company employs exhaustive planning and operational strategies to meet these critical deadlines. “From developing multiple demolition methodologies to having double execution teams and backup mechanics on standby, we leave no stone unturned. This meticulous approach is part of our commitment to risk elimination, ensuring that primary traffic arteries like the N3 are reopened on time, avoiding costly disruptions to the economy,” says Weinmann. Jet Demolition’s comprehensive service model, which includes specialised cranage and rigging subcontractors, is essential to …

Regular Maintenance of Cutting Fluids Is Essential to Maintain Quality
Regular cleaning and maintenance of cutting fluid systems significantly enhances overall efficiency by extending the life of the cutting fluids, reducing downtime, and improving the quality of the end products. “Regular maintenance is key to optimal performance. Our clients typically undertake thorough machine cleanings around shut down periods to prevent unpleasant odours from bacterial growth in stagnant soluble oil,” explains Ashleigh Pollen, Industrial & Specialty Manager at FUCHS LUBRICANTS SOUTH AFRICA The main functions of a cutting fluid include lubrication, cooling, chip removal, corrosion prevention, cutting performance and enhancement of surface finish. Water-miscible soluble cutting fluids are emulsions or solutions created by mixing the product with water, at concentrations based on the intended application. These provide excellent cooling due to their high-water content. They are typically used in high-speed machining where cooling is critical, but require regular monitoring to prevent bacterial growth, and have more complex disposal needs. In contrast, non-water-soluble (neat) cutting fluids are pure oils made from mineral, synthetic, or vegetable oils, offering superior lubrication, but less effective cooling. These are used in low-speed machining or with difficult-to-machine materials requiring high lubrication. They are easier to maintain and dispose of, with less bacterial growth. Over time, oil can deteriorate and lose its ability to lubricate effectively, resulting in increased wear and the potential for damage. “It is crucial to conduct regular maintenance and timely replacement of soluble oils to ensure that the machining process remains efficient, safe, and cost-effective,” stresses Pollen. This practice helps prevent contamination, as soluble oil can accumulate dirt, metal particles, and other impurities. Regular oil changes assist in managing these contaminants, thereby averting damage and maintaining machinery …

Farmtrac Vryheid scores a hit with the MF Global series in the forestry sector in Northern KZN
When a local forestry client wanted a real workhorse to mulch leftover branches once trees had been harvested, it acquired a MF 6711 tractor from Farmtrac Vryheid – and has not looked back since. That same tractor has operated flawlessly for over 2 000 hours since 2020 and is a flagship for the durability and versatility of the Global series, says Paul de Klerk, Whole Goods Salesperson at Farmtrac Vryheid. “The tractor has presented no problems at all, just the normal basic maintenance service intervals. There have been no major breakdowns or issues at all.” Since then, RF Gevers has acquired an MF 6712, with the dealership recently selling another MF 6712 to Kamagri and an MF 6713 to Schwartzwald Forestry. The machines sold to RF Gevers have a factory-fitted creeper gear. It is activated by either a lever (on the MF 4700) or a rocker switch (MF5700/MF6700), providing an additional two ranges to the transmission. It allows the tractor to travel at a speed as low as 100 m/h up to 2.5 kph, which allows the operator to choose the ideal mulching rate. Due to the arduous operating conditions in the forestry sector, these tractors are fitted with customised belly plates for added protection. “We have a local metalworker in our area that does the modification and instalment of the belly plates according to our specifications, which makes it easier for our technicians to service the tractors and carry out required maintenance,” says Paul. Another feature of the tractor is the wet clutch system, which makes it operator friendly and reduces wear-and-tear on the clutch itself. The power shuttle is reliable and easy to operate and can change direction on the move. All these features increase productivity and allow Farmtrac Vryheid’s clients to optimise their farming operations. “Our main focus is the MF Global series due to the diverse farming activities in our area. Most farmers use low horsepower tractors, but we do have one or two high horsepower tractors …
