It turns out, he wasn’t just pointing us to the mysterious monolith…he was leading us to gold. “This is a marker in time, not just another flavour,” adds Nomawethu Ngadlela, Chocolate Category Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa. How to defend against hotel booking scams like a pro

(MyPR.co.za) July 31, 2023 By //  by Sanele Mashinini Filed Under: Technology Edit This Article

Planning a trip should be an adventure filled with excitement, not navigating a maze of online hotel booking scams. Having access to the internet has made the process of planning a trip easier and more convenient from being able to book a hotel room at the click of a button to reading about other people's experiences from their reviews. By following a couple of clever tips, you can outsmart the scammers and embark on your next travel journey with peace of mind. Whenever you’re looking for a place to get an accidental sunburn, it's important to make sure to check who you are booking with. Before surrendering your personal and financial details, make sure that you are making your booking directly on the hotel’s website, this could save you money and ensure that your customer journey is personalised. When it comes to payment gateways: safety first Secure payment gateways are like superheroes that protect your hard-earned cash from the clutches of evil. Profitroom’s payment gateway partners are some of the most trusted operators in the industry meaning hoteliers can pass on the confidence knowing their guests’ financial data is shielded during every transaction. Print is dead and other printing and paper myths busted

(MyPR.co.za) June 26, 2023 By //  by Sanele Mashinini Filed Under: Technology Edit This Article

The world of print has received its fair share of criticism and predictions about its future in the past two decades, brought on mainly by the digitisation of industries and the disruption this has caused to print as a result. Many have predicted the downfall of print altogether, believing digital content makes print obsolete, being an environmentally damaging medium altogether – all of which could not be further from the truth. In the inaugural episode of The Switch podcast series, Timothy Thomas, Country Manager at Epson South Africa, and Samantha Choles, Communications Specialist at the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA) share their thoughts, as well as industry-based evidence, to bust the prevailing myths surrounding print and the manufacture and use of paper. Myth 1 – The print industry is on its way out. It’s no secret that print in the traditional sense has been on the decline, particularly in the realm of the media where newspaper and magazine circulations have dropped considerably and in many cases, publications shut down entirely. However, print has been around for over two centuries and will always have a place in many ways; where the pandemic led to people increasing their use of screens and digital devices, many turned to physical books as a way to shut down and enjoy a kind of digital detox. This is not to speak of the importance of paper in other applications – tissues, product packaging, labels, milk and drink cartons, and dosage leaflets for medicines. People have also realised that reading reams of content from a screen for hours on end was not just uncomfortable but lacked the charm of the familiar feeling and smell of a book. And, of course, being able to surround yourself with printed pictures of precious memories is far more appealing to a lot of people than storing them away in the cloud where you hardly get to see them. Myth 2 – Paper and printing are unsustainable. With the disruption caused by digital …

How load-shedding is inadvertently creating eco-friendly businesses

(MyPR.co.za) April 18, 2023 By //  by Sanele Mashinini Filed Under: Energy Edit This Article

While the latest bout of load-shedding has been aggressive and arguably detrimental to the functioning of business of all scales across South Africa, creating a silver lining in every grey cloud remains one of South Africa’s greatest strengths. In this case, the fact that continuing load shedding has pushed business owners into educating themselves about and implementing greener and more sustainable practices within their businesses. To safeguard against having to shut their doors, businesses are increasingly looking into alternative power supply solutions. These range in scale, complexity and cost, from installing battery-powered LED light bulbs to literally keep the lights on, to backup power systems, such as uninterrupted power supply (UPS) devices and power inverters attached to an external power supply like solar or batteries, that can be used to power computers, Wi-Fi routers, and office appliances and equipment. With fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas, being by far the largest contributor to global climate change and accounting for over 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions, alternative energy solutions – whether employed out of necessity or a sense of environmental responsibility – make a huge difference. Energy efficient equipment and systems are the next port of call businesses are looking into, to ensure the power supply they do have isn’t rapidly depleted by high-consumption devices. This might mean swopping out older printer models, for example for newer, more advanced and efficient ones. “Heat Free technology, for example, uses no heat in the ink ejection process unlike traditional printer models, and delivers lower power consumption as a result,” says Yudheer Harbhajun, Office Automation Sales Manager at Epson South Africa. “Aside from it being a good solution to the hassle of load-shedding, opting for more energy efficient equipment and devices is definitely a win for the …

South African’s confidence we will avert a climate crisis declining – Epson survey

(MyPR.co.za) November 9, 2022 By //  by Sanele Mashinini Filed Under: Environment Edit This Article

South Africans’ confidence that a climate crisis will be averted in their lifetimes has declined from 58.9% in 2021 to 56.6% in 2022 according to the second annual Epson Climate Reality Barometer released this week. The survey measures the opinions and experiences of South Africans as part of a global study by Epson into the causes and possible mitigations to climate change around the world. “The 2021 survey explored the various contributing factors to climate change and humanity’s ability to deal with it effectively, from scientific and government interventions to a slow uptake of renewable energy,” says Timothy Thomas, country manager, Epson South Africa. “This year’s survey focused on the actions that individuals have taken, or intend to take, to help tackle climate change, from less international business and leisure travel, to switching to an electric vehicle, walking or cycling more, switching to renewable energy and using more sustainable brands.” Globally, climate change is on average ranked third as a priority issue that governments, companies and individuals should be focussed on. However,?in South Africa, it is ranked fourth at 9.4% behind fixing the economy (40%), tackling poverty (19.9%) and managing inflation (14%). Findings also suggest that age is a factor, with the oldest age range (55+) most concerned about climate change (over 15%) and those in the 45 – 54 and 16 – 24 age ranges at under 7% each the least concerned. This is despite the impact of climate change witnessed in recent years, including intense rains affecting the eastern coast of South Africa, resulting in increased devastating flooding and landslides across KwaZulu-Natal and widespread ongoing droughts across the Eastern and Western Cape. This, the survey notes, suggests a ‘reality deficit’ in people potentially misunderstanding the full future impacts of climate change. Despite the varying issues South Africans believe government, companies and individuals should …

COVID-19 cloud had silver linings for SA’s tourism sector

(MyPR.co.za) September 13, 2022 By //  by Sanele Mashinini Filed Under: General Business Edit This Article

The COVID-19 pandemic turned our world upside down, affecting people, businesses, and whole economies, with the signs of recovery only emerging in the last few months. While there’s no diminishing the tragedies and disasters of the last nearly three years, that upside downturn has been the catalyst for so much positive change – and loads of opportunity too. “One of the most positive outcomes of global travel bans was that South Africans started rediscovering their own country,” says Michael Puffet, business development manager at Profitroom South Africa, and a hotelier himself. “The pandemic saw the rise of the ‘staycation’ – with people spending a night out at a hotel in their home city or choosing to spend their holiday budget on multiple shorter stays within an easy drive’s distance, rather than travelling abroad. “Those staycations meant that so many hospitality destinations could survive the pandemic by welcoming guests, keeping their teams employed, and stimulating local economies when other sectors couldn’t.” These shifting vacation choices by local people formed the foundation for the South African travel sector’s anticipated 7.6% per annum growth over the next ten years, further encouraged by the country’s currency value which makes it an enduringly popular destination among travellers from Europe and the United States. Puffet adds that there are other ways that the pandemic shifted things for the better, within the hospitality sector and across broader society too: While the business horizon looked bleak in mid-2020, many hotels and resorts chose to take advantage this quiet time to refurbish and upgrade their properties so that they were revitalized and ready to welcome guests for an improved experience once the pandemic was over. This wasn’t only a great idea for their own businesses – it kept construction and allied companies going through the tough times too. In taking steps to meet pandemic-related safety requirements, many …
