Ever wondered what separates the best from the rest? If you want to excel in anything, discipline and determination need to be at the top of your list. It's been said that if you make your passion your career, you will never feel like you are working. So if you are passionate about health and fitness, and want to become a top personal trainer, you will be driven always to progress and improve. So what does it take to get to the top of the personal training field? 1. Be organised, professional and follow the necessary procedures, health screenings and tests. 2. Do not cut corners to try and get clients faster results. Be ethical: put your clients' health and well-being first. 3. Find new ways to keep workouts interesting and your clients motivated. This will not only benefit them but will also help you keep them in the long term. 4. Be firm during sessions. Your client pays you for results, not counselling sessions or to catch up on the latest gossip. Save the chit-chats about the dog, the kids or last night's TV schedule for afterwards. 5. Give every client your undivided attention. Put your phone away and pay attention! Your client is paying you for your time after all. 6. Be the embodiment of health and fitness. You might know your textbook back to front, but unless you look the part prospective clients will not have faith that you can help them. 7. Stay knowledgeable. By reading every day, you can keep up to date with fitness trends and the latest research findings. Continue to complete short courses and broaden your knowledge in your field of expertise. 8. Learn how to read people and actively listen to your clients. A large part of the job comes down to people skills - master this and you will be sure to build good, lasting relationships with your clients. 9. Market yourself. Social media is an excellent, free tool you should use. Create your own website and keep testimonials as well as before-and-after photos. This goes a long way to instil …
A lightning tour of editing
The organisers of the South African Book Fair (SABF) are of the opinion that the world would be a better place if we all had the opportunity to read more. This is the driving force behind the SABF, the theme of which – this year - is #DiscoverYourBookself. It stems from the belief that the books we read shape us. The Professional Editors’ Guild (PEG) supports these ideas fully. In order to nurture this vision, authors need to create inspiring and engrossing literary works for readers to dive into, so that what the author has penned indeed goes towards shaping the life of readers. The author’s task is assisted by an editor, who is critical in the author’s journey of producing a great book. At the prestigious SABF literary event – the largest of its kind in Africa – the Professional Editors’ Guild (formerly the Professional Editors’ Group) will be hosting an event entitled “A lightning tour of editing”. This talk – given by Lia Marus, who sits on the PEG executive committee and is an experienced editor herself – will enlighten visitors about the process of editing and will take them through the practical aspects of what it takes to be an editor. Specific questions to be addressed will include: What are the different forms of editing? How does editing process work? What resources and skills do you need in order to become an editor? What is it essential for an editor to know? At the end of the talk, visitors will have an opportunity to try their hand at editing a piece of text. The SABF is organised by PASA (Publishers’ Association of South Africa) in association with the FP&M SETA. It will take place at the Turbine Hall, Newtown, Johannesburg from 31 July to 2 August 2015. Lia’s talk is scheduled for Sunday 2 August at 14:30 in the Achebe Room. Spend Mandela Day at Cosmo City Secondary
Cosmo City Secondary School is situated in the far north of Johannesburg at one of the pulse points of famed mixed-income development, Cosmo City. We provide tuition from grades 8 – 12 and our learners come from Cosmo City as well as the surrounding informal settlements. Since Cosmo City Secondary began, our matric results have been steadily improving: • In our first year of operation – 2007 – we obtained a 45% pass rate, • The next year, this jumped to 61%, and • In 2013 we obtained a record 85% matric pass rate. According to legislation, government subsidises state schools with a certain amount of money. On top of that, they need to charge school fees to supplement their grants. We are a no-fee school, which means that we don’t ask our learners’ parents to pay school fees. This means that we need to survive only on the money that we get from the department of education – which is not very much - as well as the money that we can earn ourselves. That’s why we need YOUR help! Come And Celebrate Mandela Day With Us! We need your 67 minutes As Mandela Day falls into the June/July school holidays this year, we are going to be hosting our Mandela Day celebrations on Tuesday 21 July. In the spirit of generosity and caring that Mandela embodied, we would like to invite everyone to come and do their 67 minutes at our school. Here are examples of what we need done: • Picking up litter, • Weeding, • Planting flowers and restocking our vegetable garden, • Painting our classrooms, and • Polishing our classroom furniture. We would also like to appeal for donations of seeds for people to plant, paint, furniture polish, gardening tools, paint brushes, refuse bags as well as refreshments for our workers!
