Coega IDZ is South Africa’s case study for international best practice in the infrastructure built programme development in Africa
Coega IDZ is South Africa’s case study for international best practice in the infrastructure built programme development in Africa Case Study: Coega Dedisa Peaking Power Plant’s construction statistics reflect international best practice through impressively low industrial action figures THE Coega Development Corporation, catalysts for championing of socio-economic development in South Africa, has chalked up an excellent rate of low labour disruption in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) and particularly in the implementation of the Coega’s mega infrastructure project – the Dedisa Peaking Power Plant – thanks to CDC’s un-parallel effective project stakeholder management and good labour relations as well as international best practice in infrastructure development. The CDC’s latest labour and economic statistics on the construction and development of the Coega Dedisa Peaking Power Plant, located in Zone 13 of the IDZ, reflect industrial action that is lower than the national average. “Similar projects in Shaka’s Kraal in KZN could learn from the Coega Dedisa Peaking Power Plant construction and Coega IDZ development on how to effectively implement projects of this nature,” said Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, Head of CDC Marketing and Communications. “Since the inception of Coega projects in 2002, construction projects in the IDZ and Port of Ngqura have generated over 60 million man hours, with 3.2 million of those hours (5%) attributed to the construction of the Dedisa PPP between 2013 and 2015,” said Duncan Grenfell, CDC Head - Recruitment and Placement. In the same period, more than 2 000 employment opportunities have been created with 70% going to local residents in Nelson Mandela Bay on the Dedisa site. Significant training interventions have also been undertaken, including 700 technical training courses offered to employees from contractors working on the site. Construction on the Dedisa plant is on track for completion in 2015 Q4, completing the …

MBDA empowers New Brighton-born SMMEs
MBDA empowers New Brighton-born SMMEs Port Elizabeth, 12 October 2015 - The colourful and ancient craft of felting has become a thriving small business for four previously unemployed Port Elizabeth women, thanks to the initiative and training of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA). LaphumiKhwezi, which means ‘the star has risen’, was founded as a co-operative, in 2012 and the small company has gone from strength to strength, exhibiting at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival and now expanding their skills to boost their business offerings. The group is currently employed by the MBDA, as part of a job-creation programme funded by the NMBM with Extended Public Works Programme resources, to make and sell felt clothing, accessories and home décor items from their studio and gallery at The Athenaeum in Central. Felt is a natural, hand-dyed cloth, produced by matting and condensing woollen fibres to form a strong, non-woven and versatile fabric that is transformed into one-of-a-kind bags, scarves, hats, jackets and more. For this creative and hard-working group, these desirable goods have also meant income and stability. “MBDA has enabled us to put food on our tables. We are the bread winners in our homes and this opportunity has been truly humbling,” said Zandile Qeqe, a LaphumiKhwezi member. Now, the LaphumiKhwezi team is also undergoing a brickmaking training programme, which will enable them to sell bricks to construction companies. Qeqe said the group will be qualified and able to work in the construction space with confidence. Eight other New Brighton residents will be recruited into the brickmaking business and will undergo training. They will join the six ladies of LaphumiKhwezi. The brickmaking business will be based in Phendla Street in New Brighton, which the MBDA has agreed to help clean up and fence off. “We are now venturing into a long term working relationship with MBDA. The agency has enabled LaphumiKhwezi to become a …
