Gangbusters Surf Magazine Issue 5 Out Now
Gangbusters Surf Magazine Issue 5 Out Now Dear Readers It has been a difficult few weeks in South Africa. Still, the latest issue of Gangbusters Magazine is a feel-good read of positivity and good vibes if you have some time on your hands. Our sympathies and strength to those who have had it tough in KZN and Jozi. Also, our thoughts to Jay Lammers, JBay shark attack victim, and former dawn patrol fan. Also, to those of you that are feeling the grips of COVID on you and your loved ones, you have our deepest sympathies. Part of the reason the magazine was published late was because we had COVID at the HQ. We were lying down quite a lot during production time, holding our heads and moaning a lot. When we weren't lying down, we took medicine, studied up on drugs and vaccines, and generally lived on aspirin and soup. That's all over now, and it's time to reveal the magazine in all her glory. Cape Town photographer John Wilkinson snags the cover shot with a sick image of Jordy Maree at Supertubes powering on his backhand. Wilkinson has the photo showcase in the magazine, with some incredible photos from West Coast and JBay and a few spots in the Boland. Gangbusters main ou in Durban Dave Lindemann has an excess of crazy images from the weeks of epic surf between the piers as well as a few insane sessions on the coast. So we get to glimpse a few big turns in this issue instead of watching the town locals getting pitted off their heads. In an interview with Dr Cohen, we learn the basics of dealing with a shark attack and a few guidelines on what to do if you're trying to assist a victim. Not the easiest of subjects, but super-relevant after the excellent medical care that Jay Lammers received from the NSRI and others at JBay during his recent attack. Remember that you can't call them 'shark attacks' anymore. They are now known as 'negative encounters' so as not to hurt the sharks' feelings. See the Washington Post for more. Similarly, for …

Hill is headed into the 2021 enduro MTB racing season as the defending Enduro World Series (EWS) Champion. “The best thing about mountain biking is just the freedom of it. No matter what’s going on in life… you’re stressed out or having a hard time. Anything. You can just go out into the bush and ride. And all that stress and whatever is going on seems to disappear. 17-Year-Old Ike Klaassen Suffers Huge Crash At Darkfest
World Cup racer and Freerider Ike Klaassen was in the second big session of DarkFEST when he under-rotated his backflip on the Rocket Launcher jump at the end of the course. The 17-year-old, who has a blossoming career in the world of Downhill MTB as South African DH champion, was riding the biggest jumps in the world. The under-rotation resulted in a huge impact, leaving Ike with a broken femur, cracked collar bone and a dislocated shoulder. The amazing on-course emergency crew were incredibly dedicated. Ike was at the hospital within an hour to begin the long road to recovery with a couple of vital operations. After a successful surgery, we spoke to him from the hospital, and his composure dealing with the situation has been inspiring and mature throughout: "The jumps are extremely weather dependant, and it was literally perfect on Monday and Tuesday. Everyone was going so crazy. We opened the 90-footer on Monday morning, then the rocket launchers on Tuesday morning. At first, it was too windy to do a top to bottom run, although it was literally perfect in the evening. We were doing huge trains, and it was probably the best moment of my life. Everyone was so hyped. But then I went up for my last run and wanted to do something cool cuz the session was so gnarly. So I tried to flip the last one. I thought if I pull a little harder and keep my arms a little straighter to slow the rotation, it would be fine. But I got a terrible pop, and I knew it was going wrong. So yeah broke my femur, which was very scary when I landed and popped my shoulder out. I'll be out for around 3 or 4 months, which means I miss most of the season, so yeah, very sad. But huge shout out to the Darkfest crew, best crew in the world!" - Ike Klaassen With the overall rolling speed over 75km down the track and airing gaps over 90 feet and heights of over 25 feet, the Darkfest course jumps are some of the biggest dirt jumps ever built. The course is designed to push the boundaries of …

The West Wind Digital Lifestyle Magazine Issue 9 Is Live.
The West Wind Digital Lifestyle Magazine Issue 9 Is Live. https://issuu.com/westwindmagazine/docs/west_wind_9 The West Wind, a digital lifestyle magazine covering the greater St Francis area, has just released its 9th issue. At 74 pages, it is a bumper issue for locals and others to read at their leisure. Best read on a tablet, The West Wind has enjoyed increasing popularity and much positive feedback over the last few issue. In this issue, we feature the amazing Surf Art of JBay resident Stephen Bibb. Inspired by JBay and the waves of Supertubes, Stephen’s art adorns many walls in our region, and he can be found at the St Francis Market with his cool ‘wood n waves’ wall hangings. We review the famous St Francis Brewery in St Francis Bay, the intimate and well-liked Hoekhuis in Humansdorp and Ginger restaurant in Port Elizabeth. All offer very unique experiences, and all serve the most sumptuous meals. The St Francis crew that swam in the Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge are a tough bunch. We tracked this event, and while it was a lot of fun, the side-current, the swell, and the occasional whale did make for an exhilarating mornings swim. Melissa Volker has written two very successful popular books, being A Fractured Land and Shadow Flicker, the latter based in St Francis Bay. In this issue, she teaches us the basics of Stand Up Paddleboarding, particularly in the flat waters of the canals. Prof. Richard Cowling’s essays are always top-rated. In this issue, we go kayaking down the Kouga with him and a few of his friends. There is also a classic video interview with Dave and Phillipa Hill, long-time St Francis residents. In the interview, they look back at how the beaches have changed over the years and why they changed so drastically. They also chat about what needs to be done to restore the beaches to their former glory.
