DJ Speedsta Is Monster Energy’s New Ambassador DJ Speedsta kicked off his stint at Metro FM in May 2017. He has been ruling the airwaves since then. Along the way, he followed his passion and continued skating and even went on to open a skatepark. We got hold of the man and chatted about life and his new role as an ambassador for Monster Energy. What’s the show on Metro FM all about? My show s called Absolute Hip Hop, and it airs on Metro FM every Saturday night between 20:00 and 22:00. It’s a specialized show focused on Hip Hop. I am a Hip Hop DJ, broadcaster and opinion leader. I live and breathe Hip Hop. Why is Metro FM known as the coolest station? Metro FM is cool because it speaks to the urban market. The aspiring, working-class audience. Where is your skatepark? I recently opened a skatepark called “The Skate Hub,” an indoor skatepark in Johannesburg. It’s always been a dream of mine to open up my own skatepark. The opportunity came, and I took it with both hands. The skate scene in Johannesburg needed an indoor park. When did you get into skate? I first got on a skateboard in Grade 2 - 8 years old. Nowadays, I do most of my skateboarding in Johannesburg, either in the city or at the local parks we have around the area. I’ve taken some hard slams before but have never broken anything. Mostly just dislocations. I used to throw myself as a kid, but I’m a lot more relaxed now. I skate to my abilities, as it is just a hobby. No pressure whatsoever. Who is DJ Speedsta? The 2016 SA Hip Hop DJ of the year DJ on Metro FM Skater Skate Park Owner Final words I’m super happy to be with Monster Energy. This is a huge deal for me. All the things I have been working on in my career as a DJ are starting to come together. I’m grateful for the opportunity. The West Wind Digital Lifestyle Magazine Issue 9 Is Live.
The West Wind Digital Lifestyle Magazine Issue 9 Is Live. https://issuu.com/westwindmagazine/docs/west_wind_9 The West Wind, a digital lifestyle magazine covering the greater St Francis area, has just released its 9th issue. At 74 pages, it is a bumper issue for locals and others to read at their leisure. Best read on a tablet, The West Wind has enjoyed increasing popularity and much positive feedback over the last few issue. In this issue, we feature the amazing Surf Art of JBay resident Stephen Bibb. Inspired by JBay and the waves of Supertubes, Stephen’s art adorns many walls in our region, and he can be found at the St Francis Market with his cool ‘wood n waves’ wall hangings. We review the famous St Francis Brewery in St Francis Bay, the intimate and well-liked Hoekhuis in Humansdorp and Ginger restaurant in Port Elizabeth. All offer very unique experiences, and all serve the most sumptuous meals. The St Francis crew that swam in the Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge are a tough bunch. We tracked this event, and while it was a lot of fun, the side-current, the swell, and the occasional whale did make for an exhilarating mornings swim. Melissa Volker has written two very successful popular books, being A Fractured Land and Shadow Flicker, the latter based in St Francis Bay. In this issue, she teaches us the basics of Stand Up Paddleboarding, particularly in the flat waters of the canals. Prof. Richard Cowling’s essays are always top-rated. In this issue, we go kayaking down the Kouga with him and a few of his friends. There is also a classic video interview with Dave and Phillipa Hill, long-time St Francis residents. In the interview, they look back at how the beaches have changed over the years and why they changed so drastically. They also chat about what needs to be done to restore the beaches to their former glory. The West Wind is on Facebook The Wind Wind is on Instagram Contact: editor@thewestwind.co.za Video: The …

Theo Erlangsen and Ike Klaassen Victorious at WP Mountain Bike Downhill Event
Ike Klaassen and Theo Erlangsen Win The Western Province Downhill MTB Event, Round Two of SRAM WC Series Taal Monument, Paarl – A new lower section to the track and a few other revisions saw riders looking at a fresh start for the second event in the SRAM WC DH series last weekend. Fresh autumn mornings made way for warm afternoons, and all 114 riders were set for two days of gravity and racing. An interesting point is that over 50% of the 114 riders entered were under 16 years of age. It's great to see such a high turnout of the kids, and it shows a positive demographic spread for the next couple of years and for emerging champions. Usual suspects Theo Erlagnsen and Ike Klaassen were in their element. They were looking to be likely champs from the outset. Both have their winning faces on now, and despite Erlangsen being chased by Johan Potgieter, victory was his. "It was a cool, well-run event with loads of entries," said Erlangsen. "Because it was a local Western Province race, it's best of two runs. On my first run, I only beat Johan (Potgieter) by half a second, so it was a bit close for comfort. So I pulled finger on my next run and took one second off my time. Johan actually went a bit slower in his second run, so I ended up pumping him by a full second or so. It is obviously quite a short track, so getting big margins is quite hard. I was pretty stoked by a big old one-second margin." Theo hasn't lost a heat since the beginning of the year, which bodes well for the rest of his season. "Ike also did well," said Erlangsen of Ike Klaassen, his Monster Energy teammate. "His first run wasn't so good, and he was about 5th or 6th, but he pulled it together later. He absolutely ripped his second run and finished 4th overall, winning the Junior Men's category in the process." The event complied with all covid safety regulations, and from all accounts, was an excellent, all-action weekend's event. Both Ike and Theo have had a great start to their years' racing, …

Gangbusters Surfing Magazine Issue 2 Out Now
Gangbusters Surfing Magazine Issue 2 Out Now South Africa – Gangbusters Surf Magazine issue 2 is out now and is getting excellent traction and feedback online. With a wide array of inclusive content, the local surfer community and a fair number of international readers have all expressed their enjoyment at the style and breadth of the coverage inside the magazine. In this issue, we have a photo feature by the legendary Nic Bothma, who currently works as a photographer for European Press-photo Agency. Nic has been shooting surfing, mainly in Cape Town, for the last 30 years, and was first to document the guys surfing Dungeons in 1999. He also shot the session at Madiba’s Left on Robben Island. We look at two surf industry members doing their own thing and ‘on the move.’. Mat Marais from MAT Surfboards tells us about the satisfaction of mowing foam, and Stephen Price describes bringing a new apparel label, NOAH, into the industry. Both hard-working kind of guys, their respective businesses are set to take off. We also have a squizz at two surfers who are ‘new talent’. Ntokozo ‘Surprise’ Maphumo from Durban and Brian Furcy from Mauritius are two such surfers who are focused on competitive surfing and determined to make their mark on the South African surf scene as well as the global stage. We document their thoughts and ideas at this relatively early stage of their careers. There is an intimate reveal of facing a 10-foot wave at The Bay Of Plenty in 1978. First published in Shaun Tomson’s book, The Surfer’s Code, the 1977 World Champion talks us through the terror of a 10-footer smashing on the Bay sandbank, the thrill of making it out alive, and the discordance of surviving the wave of a lifetime with no spectators, no cameras, and no contest announcers. It is gripping stuff. There is also all the latest news, gossip, rumours, and a few letters to the editor, covered in 72 digital surf action pages. Special mention to Dave Lindemann for …

The Unprecedented Rise Of Mobile Gaming In South Africa With ‘Zero Data Game Sharing’
The COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe and the ensuing lockdown moved almost everyone indoors, disrupting the global business environment. While many industries took the brunt of the severe economic stress, some experienced an unexpected boom owing to their unique value proposition. One such sector which witnessed explosive growth and is predicted to grow even further is gaming. Attributable to the rising 'work-from-home' and 'school-from-home' models, the pandemic has driven an upsurge in gaming with the likes of Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, or Among Us and Animal Crossing, only fanning the flame further and fostering the gaming trend, especially given the tech-savvy and 'always-on' culture of the South Africans. However, in South Africa, there is one significant challenge for gamers, i.e. the high data cost. The country ranks148th out of 228 countries globally, with their data more expensive than even large parts of Africa, including Nigeria (58th), Kenya (41st), Tanzania (23d), and Rwanda (64th). So, how has South Africa still seen such explosive growth in gaming, despite the high cost of data? A global trend Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report predicts the burgeoning rise of gaming in 2021, with 2.8 billion gamers worldwide helping the market generates revenues of $189.3 billion. To put this into perspective, it’s more than four times the box office revenues ($43 billion in 2019) and more than three times the global music industry revenue ($57 billion in 2019). Assisted by improved availability and the deep penetration of smartphones, easier internet access, and increasing cloud gaming, it’s not surprising that mobile gaming accounts for close to half (48%) of the industry’s revenue. The power of mobile Mobile internet usage in South Africa poses a huge opportunity for the industry. With a staggering 94.6% mobile internet users among the total, spending an average of 4hours 55 minutes a day, Statista estimates the …

Working with surf forecasting and surf camera website www.wavescape.co.za along with Boardtalk, Gangbusters is online-only, it's a free magazine, and is aimed at everyone who surfs in South Africa. Made to be read on phones, tablets, and any other screens, Gangbusters celebrates being a surfer in South Africa. Anyone can get a photo in this online magazine. It is monthly, so there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to get their 15 minutes of fame. This first issue showcases the photography of popular Durban photographer Dave Lindemann. Dave shot many perfect but empty lineups during the hard days of the early lockdown. Also, he captured many incredible images from both Durban coasts. Dawn patrol shoots and high-action imagery make up the showcase. Stevan Rice is a lesser-known big wave charger who started off his surfing career at Addington. He has now graduated to Mavericks and was serendipitously-placed to be there for Mavericks' best season since they started surfing it. He got some bombs, including the wave of a lifetime, so we caught up with him and filled in the holes with peer-reviews from Twiggy and Grant Washburn. In international news, there is also an interesting article on the new Wavegarden Cove set up in Switzerland and all the exciting developments there. Founded by a 25-year-old - Adam Bonvin - the wave pool is called Alaïa Bay and is situated in Sion in Switzerland. This town enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year. Miles Masterson reports from the Cape West Coast, where Cape Town big wave surfer Mike Schlebach has formed an environmental NPO to fight beach mining. There is already a lot of coastal damage up there, and nothing is being done about it. This is a cause we can all support. We delve in. Jordy and MFeb make an East Coast trip and score some …

‘It’s so important for our little ones to learn life skills like gardening’
‘It’s so important for our little ones to learn life skills like gardening’ (11 November 2020) With an 80% unemployment rate among the youth and most elderly community members surviving on pension grants, Blaauwskop in the Northern Cape is a low-income area in constant need of help. Marcellino September, 54, has been the Blaauwskop Intermediate School Principal for 22 years and is aware of the socio-economic challenges that have an impact on the 600 learners at the school, and he’s therefore exceedingly grateful for the support Shoprite recently provided for the school’s food garden. “When you’re in a rural area, sometimes you feel like you’re forgotten. You think that good things only happen in urban areas and you believe that companies forget that support is needed in rural areas too,” says Marcellino. The food garden at the school was started in 1998 to supplement the school’s feeding programme, but the part-time gardener who’s been taking care of the garden needed help as the school was hoping to grow crops throughout the year. Shoprite arranged for the installation of rainwater harvesting infrastructure - including gutters and a 5,000-litre water tank - at the school, and donated seedlings, gardening tools, fruit trees and much more. The retailer has also been running full-day training workshops to teach the teachers, learners and the gardener about modern permaculture methods to make the best use of their resources. “Because we now have a better understanding of how to grow the crops in an eco-friendly way, we have incorporated gardening skills into the curriculum. It’s so important for our little ones to learn life skills like gardening because that will stay with them forever. It also helps them to have an understanding of the food supply chain,” explains Marcellino. The Shoprite Group is committed to fighting hunger across South Africa and has since 2015 partnered with 119 community food gardens and 475 home gardens, benefitting over …
