Sanral bursary holder announced top matric in Eastern Cape
JANUARY, 2016: Theresa Brummer (18) has made her mark as one of Port Elizabeth’s exceptional young achievers, ready to make an impact in the field of medicine. Theresa, a Collegiate Girls’ High School matriculant, was named the top pupil in the Eastern Cape Province at a gala dinner held at the East London International Convention Centre on Wednesday (6 January). She achieved eight distinctions overall - seven of them for maths, science, biology, Afrikaans, English, French and Life Orientation. Her eighth distinction was for Admaths, which was her IEB subject. “I am so happy about my results. Hard work does pay off in the end,” said an elated Theresa. Theresa’s advice to other youngsters is that even though school work is important, if you don’t get the results you want, work hard at turning a negative into a positive and set yourself new goals. “Even if you fail, you can improve the next time. It is important to set your own goals and work towards them. Do what excites you, rather than trying to please someone else.” Theresa was awarded a SANRAL bursary in 2014. She was selected because her results were excellent, and for an essay she wrote on her future goals in which she spoke about the science-based careers she was considering. SANRAL and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) have hosted the Science, Technology, Engineering and related Management/Mathematics (STEM) Fields Pipeline Project since 2000. The primary objective of the initiative is to promote and develop the physical science skills of learners in grades 10 to 12 in the Eastern Cape, and to ultimately increase the number of learners qualifying to study for degrees in science and technology. “The STEM programme is very helpful. Learners get to explore the practical side of the syllabus. The experiments help us understand the work better. We got to build atoms and saw how these worked,” said Theresa. “There’s a lot of negativity towards maths and science. Learners must …

SANRAL issues certificates to 108 learners in Butterworth
December 15, 2015: More than a hundred learners from Butterworth were assured of a more promising future when they graduated from a learnership programme hosted by the South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) earlier this month. The inspiring ceremony was held at Magalakangqa village in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, with 108 graduates receiving certificates mainly for road construction skills. SANRAL project manager Simphiwe Ngabase said the learners also received generic skills training on bricklaying and carpentry, where they were practically exposed to the building of a permanent site office structure. On completion of the project, the site office was converted to a community hall for the community. “The site office was built during the implementation phase by more than 200 bricklaying and carpentry trainees from two wards. Instead of demolishing the building after completion of the project, it was converted for the residents to be utilised as a community centre,” said Ngabase. “During the 2014/15 financial year SANRAL awarded 223 contracts worth R14.4 billion for new works, rehabilitation and improvement, periodic and special maintenance, routine road maintenance, community development, supervision and other activities. Furthermore, SANRAL spent R2.9 billion on contracts with SMMEs, of which more than R1.7 billion went to 765 black-owned firms. In terms of job creation, 19 820 average equivalent full-time jobs were created,” he said. - Ends – Issued on behalf of SANRAL by Meropa Communications. How the US Fed hike could impact South African markets
In anticipation of the US Federal Reserve bank hiking its benchmark Fed Funds interest rate, the first rate hike in the US in almost a decade, the South African Reserve Bank took proactive action by hiking the interest rate by 25 basis points at the last Monetary Policy Committee meeting. This was an attempt to lessen the residue effect that the hike would have on the South African market. Some economists believe that the reaction of the US equity markets to the hike in the US interest rates will be one of the most crucial influences on South Africa’s financial markets this year. Fed Chair, Janet Yellen had prepared the financial markets for the rate hike by describing the contraction in the US GDP during the first quarter of the year as transitory. The rate was already expected to rise in September this year, however the rate increase was pushed back to the end of the year. Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, says that the US has a major impact on the markets around the world, pointing to the sub-prime crisis as an example. “Often the monetary policies of the US Fed have a knock-on effect, with investors closely watching the US markets. While there are currently not that many US investors in South Africa when compared with some other emerging markets, the hike in rate is likely to increase investment interest in the US, with many choosing to take their money out of foreign countries and place it back into the US markets,” says Goslett. “Although year-to-date foreign investors have bought approximately R8.5 billion worth of SA bonds and around R22.9 billion in equities, data has shown that the percentage of non-resident owned SA government bonds has dropped to its lowest level in 18 months due to a loss of appetite ahead of the Fed’s expected interest rate hike. Now that the rate has been hiked this trend is likely to continue.” South Africa, along with other emerging-market economies will have to adopt measures that will …

AND, for the busy publisher using Wordpress, we have a way for you to now automatically aggregate niche content from MyPR and encourage you to follow the model that MyCapeTown has pioneered. MyCapeTown is based on the Wordpress Content Management Platform and utilises an autoblogging platform called WP Robot and the 'Cape Town' tagged RSS feed to automatically publish press releases from MyPR to MyCapeTown The steps are simple: You must be running your site on Wordpress Purchase and install WP Robot HERE * If you are bewildered, help is at hand - for $5.00 I will install WP Robot and set up three campaigns for you. * Current prices range from $89 (Basic) to $129 (Full) to $329.00 (Developer). As a dyed in the wool tight-ass I hummed and hawed about spending money on WP Robot but, after due consideration, went big and bought the developer's version. (Scroll down for links to more auto blogging plugins). My reasons for buying the developer version were: Once off price and lifetime updates. The ability to give proper accreditation and not just 'steal' other peoples work. The fact that it is keyword or RSS based and can be tweaked to whatever niche that I am targeting. The once off price I paid was equivalent to one month of the monthly salary I would have paid a data capturer. Back to a practical example: Once you have installed WP Robot you have the choice of fetching articles from MyPR (and many other sources), republishing on your site as a draft or immediately all under remote control and as regular as you deem fit, whilst you sleep, eat and play. Your WP Robot won't take holidays or day's off sick, ask for an increase or use your resources without your permission. Now that is a sweet deal for a tight-ass such as myself. See MyCapeTown.co.za …

Sagandira strikes balance between football and academic success
Madibaz footballer of the year Cloudius Sagandira is a rising sports star who has proved that it is possible to strike a balance between sporting and academic achievement. The 24-year-old striker, who is heading into the final year of his masters degree in chemistry, dreams of both a professional football career and completing his doctoral studies. "From the age of seven I've had a passion for football and academics," said Sagandira. "I was equally talented in both and couldn't separate the two." The Zimbabwe-born forward was an integral part of the Madibaz's successes this season, which included winning the Safa Nelson Mandela Bay regional league promotion championships and defending their Port Elizabeth Football Association league title. His standout performances in these and the Varsity Football competition have already drawn the attention of several professional clubs. But Sagandira, who completed his BSc honours degree with distinction last year, is determined to remain focused on his academic studies and have the best of both worlds. "The sky is not the limit; with great will, someone can go beyond it," he said. "No one should limit him or herself. Never settle for anything, knowing that there is always something better ahead." An example to aspiring young talent, Sagandira said his greatest role model was his father, who taught him to believe in himself and inspired him to achieve both on and off the playing field. "He is the one I look up to, as he believes in giving the best in everything you do." He said a sense of responsibility, good time management skills and a strong personal faith were key factors in his success. Despite his achievements thus far, Sagandira remains humble and grateful for the opportunities he has had. "Words cannot express how much this institution has changed and shaped my life. Going to study there was probably the best decision I have ever made. I am who I am because of NMMU." Find Madibaz4U …

New rugby manager comes home to Madibaz
The FNB NMMU Madibaz's newly appointed rugby manager, Melissa Awu, has come a long way since her childhood memories of watching the 1995 Rugby World Cup in her New Brighton family home and seeing her grandmother's excitement as the Springboks lifted the trophy. After falling in love with the sport, Awu, now 31, charted her own course towards becoming a respected sports administrator and believes she can help take Madibaz rugby to new heights. "This is the dream job. I am from Port Elizabeth, I studied at NMMU, and I have travelled a lot to further my career," she said. "Everything has led to me coming home and managing the sport closest to my heart at my old institution." Awu took up the position on December 1 and looks forward to finding her feet before the start of university rugby's busiest and most challenging period – the FNB Varsity Cup competition. "I have met with the players and coach and the guys are in great shape," she said confidently. "They look ready to take on the Varsity Cup and I know we can make a great impact in the 2016 competition. We are going in there to win it." Awu might not have played rugby herself, but her family and career background have more than prepared her for the task at hand. She hails from a sporting family with a footballing father, a mother who played netball and a brother who participated in various forms of martial arts. While attending Pearson High School, Awu was selected for the hockey and football first teams, and even turned out for the under-17 provincial football team. In 2005 she finished her sports management degree at NMMU and shortly thereafter enrolled for an internship at EP Rugby. That turned into a public relations and marketing position at the now defunct Southern Spears. She then took up a sports administration position at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. There she was in charge of administration and events for no fewer than eight sporting codes, among them rugby, squash and …
