Join Iziko Museums of South Africa on Saturday, 16 February, for a public discussion, entitled: Uncontained: opening the Community Arts Project archive – “What do we mean by ‘hidden voices’ in the arts after apartheid?” This discussion, co-hosted with the Centre for Humanities Research, University of the Western Cape, will explore the above-mentioned question. It arises from the exhibition, Uncontained: opening the Community Arts Project archive. The show mainly introduces linocuts, a medium intimately associated with both the now defunct community arts project movement and the history of modern black art practice in South Africa. Brits aims to survive Knysna race
Former Olympic pole-vaulter and reality show survivor Okkert Brits will face his toughest challenge yet when he takes on the three-day Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300 in Knysna from February 22 to 24. Brits will be participating in his first ever mountain bike stage race as a guest of First National Bank, which is sponsoring the R70 000 prize purse. However, he said he would not have his eyes on the prize, as he was relatively new to the sport and had only been training for the past 10 weeks. “The objective is just to finish and have as nice a time – and break as few things – as possible,” said Brits. The 39-year-old said it was a great opportunity and that he had heard the Knysna event was one of the toughest and most beautiful stage races on the national calendar. “If you’re not an endurance athlete it’s really hard,” said the former track and field star. “I have no experience and no idea what I’ve gotten myself into!” Brits, who will be competing in the Absa Cape Epic alongside former Welsh rugby captain Colin Charvis in March, said he needed to test his endurance as much as possible ahead of the eight-day event. “I need to see if I can make it. The great thing about the GR300 is that I’m really going to find out where my problem areas are.” He will be riding with FNB’s Mike Howell, who has completed multiple Ironman competitions, in the 300km Garden Route event. “As a pole-vaulter you pretty much do everything on your own and you know how to sort yourself out. But now it’s different because you’ve got a partner to worry about and you’re both going to have good and bad days.” Although, weighing in at 105kg, the big man was not looking forward to the climbs, he said he would rely on his skills as a high school BMX racing champion to assist on the technical descents. “I’ve already had a few proper falls but as a pole-vaulter you make your living out of falling, so I’m used to it,” he laughed. One of an elite group of athletes to …

NEW LOW GI ‘ICE CREAM’ HITS SHELVES IN WESTERN CAPE JUST IN TIME FOR THE HEATWAVE
An exciting new low GI frozen dairy dessert, known as Wilfredo's, has just been launched in Cape Town. With a Low GI ranking of 24, it is the perfect treat for everyone who loves ice cream but wants to cut back on sugar and fat. It is available in four flavours: vanilla, strawberry, mint and cinnamon with more flavours in development. Wilfredo's has been extensively tested by the Low GI Foundation and been approved by Diabetes South Africa. Made purely with natural ingredients and dairy products - no vegetable fat is used – it is the ideal treat for slimmers, diabetics and children with ADHD – in fact for anyone wanting to follow a healthy lifestyle. Extensive tests show there is no sugar spike or crash for anyone enjoying a daily tub of Wilfredo's. The dessert is high in calcium, kind to teeth, contains no colourants and provides sustained energy. It is also Halaal approved. Liesbet Delport a dietitian and founder member of the GI Foundation of South Africa explains that GI is a ranking from 1 to 100 which measures the effect of a food on your blood-glucose level over the two hours after the food is eaten. According to the foundation, foods with GI values of 55 or below could aid in the management of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke as they digest easily and are absorbed into the body slowly. “Research has shown that very high glucose levels after meals, called glucose spikes, are damaging to our arteries and various blood vessels and they promote far too much insulin,” Delport says. “Eating low-GI foods means you avoid those spikes and dramatic falls in blood-glucose so you get a much steadier stream of energy. You, therefore, reduce your risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases that are implicated by those blood-glucose fluctuations.” Wilfredo's is available at the Wellness Warehouse and at selected branches of the Food Lovers Market and Kuaui in the Cape Town area with plans afoot to market the product …

Canadian company invests in Knysna race
Rocky Mountain Bicycles has renewed its title sponsorship of the Southern Cape’s premier stage race, the Rocky Mountain Garden Route 300, which takes place in and around Knysna from February 22 to 24. The upmarket Canadian bicycle brand, which has had a presence in South Africa for almost three years, confirmed its commitment following a sell-out event this year. According to Rocky Mountain brand manager Eugene Haley, the race had all the hallmarks of becoming one of the top stage races in the country. “This is our second year of sponsorship and we anticipate this relationship continuing for at least the next couple of years.” Haley said the 300km race, which follows a clover-shaped route through indigenous forests and mountains, represented the kind of riding at which Rocky Mountain bikes excelled. “Because the bikes are tested in Canada on what are considered to be the best, toughest and most technical mountain bike trails in the world, we feel they are ideally suited to withstand the rigours of riding in South Africa.” He said the title sponsorship would include a cash component as well as a range of lucky draw prizes. These include a full-carbon 29-inch bike worth R40 000 and Evoc product giveaways valued at R10 000. In addition, long-standing race beneficiary, the Knysna Sport School, would receive an entry-level bike for its cycling development programme, said Haley. Local pro team and this year’s runners-up, Jarryd Haley and Timo Cooper, riding in the sponsor’s colours, would return for a crack at the title, said Haley. Cooper won the inaugural event in 2011 with Jacques Rossouw. “We will also be pairing Renay Groustra with German rider Daniel Gathof, who has had multiple podium finishes for Team Rocky Mountain in stage races like the TransAlp.” Riders will compete for an overall prize purse of R70 000, which is sponsored by First National Bank. Race director Patric Mosterd of Garden Route Events said the race, which is …

Making and un–making history at GIPCA’s Live Art Festival
GIPCA’s Live Art Festival, to be held 30 November to 4 December 2012 in Cape Town, features a range of work where history is made: bringing it into visceral focus, provoking its susceptible and tenuous nature; and investigating how it changes according to point of view. Tabula Rasa (a clean slate) is a conversation-and-dance performance that follows the publication of Tossie van Tonder’s book NOBONKE, She of all People. The writing is an extraordinary telling of a life story; one woman’s journey towards the essence of herself as woman in racial intimacies, dancer, lover, mother, Afrikaner, white, strongly South African. As a dancer, Van Tonder’s words often tumble into movement, speaking through the body. She will be in a dancing conversation; discussing the contents and journey of her book with blind performer, poet, singer-songwriter, braille-reader and editor Jacques Coetzee. “It was never an option to have a launch in the literary tradition. This book comes with the dance. That is how I wrote it over 21 years and that is how it is being released into the world,” says Van Tonder. The conversation between Coetzee and Van Tonder will consist of questions and answers pertaining to the dancing body of the writer, the significance of movement where words fail the story, and a display of the idea of ‘a clean slate’ in the South African context. An edition of 200 signed copies printed in hard cover will be available after the performance at R280 per copy. Edited by Sharon Friedman, Post-apartheid Dance - many bodies, many voices, many stories presents unique perspectives on post-apartheid dance in South Africa by South African authors. It is the first singular body of work to have emerged in any book form that attempts to provide a cohesive account of the range of voices within post-apartheid South African dance. Authors include Adrienne Sichel, Maxwell Xolani Rani, Elizabeth Triegaardt, Gerard Samuel, Steven van Wyk, Lliane Loots and Kristina …
