Iziko Museums of South Africa, in partnership with Vidamemoria Heritage Consultants, will host a seminar: Debating Space, History and Heritage, the Bo-Kaap Sites on 20 November 2012. The event will take place in the Community Hall at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, Wale Street at 09:00. The Bo-Kaap area has a multi-faceted history. Its architectural heritage, links with the history of slavery, the development and spread of Islam and its contribution to the development of the Afrikaans language are examples of its significance, not only for Cape Town and the Western Cape but, for South Africa as a whole. The Tana Baru Cemetery, the Prayer Quarry and various other sites of the Bo-Kaap have weathered a number of storms in the past, including the Slums Act of 1934, the Group Areas Act and, in recent years, a property boom, encroaching commercialization and gentrification. These heritage sites represent a diversity of narratives, many of which still have to be adequately researched and told. This public dialogue is aimed at stimulating a wider interest in these heritage sites and encouraging greater understanding of Bo-Kaap’s historical and cultural significance. Furthermore, it seeks to encourage a sharing of memories linked to Bo-Kaap sites, in order to build more inclusive narratives of the area and to gain commitment to developing effective strategies for the preservation and interpretation of these sites. Speakers will include Mr Osman Shaboodien (Bo-Kaap Civic Association Chairperson), Dr Noëleen Murray (Geography Department, University of Western Cape) and Professor Stephen Townsend (School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics, University of Cape Town). The seminar is open to members of the public and entrance is free. Blurring of boundaries in new digital landscape at GIPCA’s Live Art Festival
Our digital lives come to the fore as artists give credence to concerns over the boundaries between electronic constructs and reality, at GIPCA’s Live Art Festival taking place in Cape Town between 30 November and 4 December 2012. Swiss Theatre director, space designer, and curator Boris Nikitin presents Imitation of Life - a profound piece which points to the origin of our suspicion that things might not be what they appear to be; and an extraordinary interpretation of Woyzeck, featuring a live audio stream of the performance on the web. Paradise is a religious term for a place in which existence is positive, harmonious and timeless. It is conceptually a counter image of the supposed miseries of human civilisation. Some people say paradise is something different for each person. Highway to Heaven/Paradise Road is a conversation between two artists trying to get to that place called Paradise; Hlengiwe Lushaba Madlala(2006 Standard Bank Young Artist Award Winner for Dance) and Sdu Majola have worked together on a number of projects and bring a wealth of local and international choreographic and directorial experience to this piece, which unpacks questions surrounding boundaries, and the effect of borders in society. Locating these issues in the over abundance of social media, The Digital Man is a live performance installation that grapples with juxtaposition of Real Identity (what may be regarded as the essence), and Digital Identity. In a world filled with overbearing but hypnotic multi-media experiences, affirmations through outside electronic, disembodied ‘hits’ are critiqued through meticulous sculpting of live performance with media. Comprising rising stars, writer Gabriella Pinto and performer Imaan Isaacs, The Poor Artists, who present this work, operate as a collective and aim to create work that inspires intrigues and provokes audiences. James Webb has been working on both large-scale installations in galleries and museums as well as unannounced …

DANIEL BEDINGFIELD opens the Old Mutual Summer Sunset concert series
UK based Daniel Bedingfield, who has previously charted at #1 in South Africa, will be opening the Old Mutual Summer Sunset concert series on 25 November at Kirstenbosch. Daniel Bedingfield's pop wizardry earned him a BRIT Award, six U.K. Top 10 singles and 4 million in album sales from 2001 to 2004. The songwriter who rocketed to the top of the pop world with Gotta Get Thru This is back in a huge way. His new material moves adroitly between dance-floor bangers and R&B-spiked rock, freak-funk and chilling piano ballads, effects-heavy electro and sunny island reggae. “There are a million ways of self-expression, and I can’t hold to one style," he says. "There isn’t one sound in my head, there are thousands." After leaving his record company and with it the concept that there was only one way to do things in this business, he struck out on his own. Mounting a campaign through PledgeMusic he reconnected with his still-ardent fans and fostered a spate of new releases — each seemingly springing from a different creative impulse. Ambitious, bold, brazen even, his new EP Stop The Traffik - Secret Fear, Daniel is taking a distinctly different approach from his former pop-loving, uber-calculated chart topping debut . He is venturing into brave new territory carving out his claim as the wild and diverse wide-eyed crooner he has always been. The proceeds from this release in part benefit Bedingfield’s global charity Stop The Traffik, an organization that fights to prevent human slavery and works to prosecute the traffickers. The son of New Zealand philanthropists who relocated to London to work in the areas affected by the Brixton riots, Bedingfield and his two talented sisters, Natasha and Nikola Rachelle (The Golden Phoenix), were reared in a musical household surrounded by the diverse sounds of the time — the Police, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan — as well as the reggae embraced by his family’s many …

Garden Route women up to the challenge
Hundreds of female runners along the Garden Route took to the streets of George at the weekend to raise money for charity. The inaugural Heather Park SUPERSPAR Sunrise Challenge saw almost 400 participants take full advantage of perfect weather conditions to raise R5 000 for special needs school Up With Down’s on Saturday. The women-only event – which followed an undulating course through the suburbs of Heather Park and Rooirivier Rif – offered 5km, 10km and 2km relay options. “We decided to hold a women’s race as we wanted to do something different,” said Heather Park SUPERSPAR owner Duncan Brown. “We also wanted to add a fun element, so men were allowed to enter if they were dressed in drag.” Brown said pupils from the school held a market day at Heather Park SUPERSPAR every Thursday to raise funds and this gave him the idea to use the race as a platform to support their efforts. He said they were hoping to attract more than a thousand runners to next year’s event. “Our aim is to help people in our area while having some fun, but we need the support of the community.” Race organiser Danie Raubenheimer, from the George Nedbank Running Club, said planning for next year’s event would start soon and that businesses and schools would be their main focus. “We would also like to get more top athletes to take part because children love to see their heroes in action.” The prize for the best-dressed male went to Jan Nel while the Purple Turtles was voted the best-dressed relay team. Melissa van Rensburg of George won the 10km feature event ahead of Alison Jordaan (George) and Lisl Grobler (Knysna). RE-CM invests in Knysna race
Title sponsor RE-CM has upped the ante by offering almost R100 000 worth of prizes in next year’s Knysna 200 mountain bike race, for which entries opened this week. The third edition of the three-stage race, which takes place along the Garden Route from June 7, now offers a R45 000 prize purse for the winners. In addition RE-CM, an asset management company, will be giving away unit trusts to the value of R50 000 in a raffle, with proceeds from ticket sales going to race’s charity of choice. According to race organiser Patric Mosterd, the increased investment will go a long way towards making the 200km event one of the most prestigious and sought-after on the mountain biking calendar. “This is about proper mountain biking and awesome single track. The pros can race it in the red from beginning to end but it’s also a great experience for first-time stage racers.” Last year’s event was won by Louis Bresler-Knipe and Jaco Venter of Team Contego-28E, while the bizhub-FCF pairing of Yolandi du Toit and Leana de Jager took the women’s title. Mosterd said the field would be strictly limited to 300 riders, across the solo and team categories, in order to retain the overall quality of the event. “What makes the race so special is that the daily stages start with the best riding in the forest – there’s no junk miles getting to the trails.” He said the 74km first stage, featuring 1 540m of ascent, would roll out from the Knysna Elephant Park, pass through lush Wittedrift farms and follow the old railway line to the lagoonside finish. “The highlight on day one must be riding ‘Parks se Pad’, which is the Holy Grail of all mountain bike routes in the area. The RE-CM Knysna 200 is the only event to traverse this beautiful stretch of indigenous forest.” The 68km second stage, which climbs 1 250m, starts in Rheenendal and takes riders through the “no-go” sections of the Garden Route National Park. “This is elephant territory and riding this section of …
