Chelangat smashes All Comers Record as Kipkemboi destroys deep men’s field at Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K
Kenya’s Jesca Chelangat was in record breaking mood as she took 14 seconds off the South African All Comers Record at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in eThekwini on Sunday 10 July, crossing the line in 30:41. Countryman, Isaac Kipkemboi, after two runner up positions in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series, was unstoppable as he romped home in 27:37, while Maxime Chaumeton became the first South African to go under 28 minutes on SA Soil, clocking 27:58. “We could not have asked for a better turn out today,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “A SA All Comers Record, five sub 28 min clockings and the first South African to break the 28min barrier here at home. Add to that the thousands of Durbanites who ‘painted the City red’. Today’s Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K was a big boost to road running in the City and in South Africa.” Isaac Kipkemboi, who had to play runner up to Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo at the last two editions of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 12K and 10K, was in no mood to be thwarted again, and took the race by the scruff of the neck within the first 2km. Only Asbel Rutto and Namakoe Nkasi were able to stay with the blistering pace set by Kipkemboi. But even they had to concede to the relentless pace by Kipkemboi after 3km. And from there Kipkemboi was on his own. Behind him though Namakhoe Nkhasi and Abel Rutto were involved in a fierce tussle of their own for the last two podium positions. Kipkemboi had too big a lead when he hit the promenade with around 3km to go and he was chasing the clock. By the time he broke the tape for the win, Kipkemboi had smashed his Personal Best by 27 seconds to finish in 27:37. “I wanted to win and to run fast,” said Kipkemboi. “That’s why I came here. I did that. I am happy.” Nkhasi just edged Rutto (27:52 – 27:55). For Nkhasi this was not only a massive Personal Best (from 28:24 to 27:52), but also yet another Lesotho National …

The world’s best runners set to descend on eThekwini for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K
The streets of Durban will be painted red this coming Sunday, 10 July 2022 as the world’s best runners #RunForDurban at the 5th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K. “We can’t wait to paint the streets of Durban red on Sunday,” says Michael Meyer Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “Some of the world’s best will be seen going head-to-head with the crème of South African Road Running. What makes the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series extra special is the fact that social runners also get the opportunity to rub shoulders with the elites over the fast flat course that starts opposite the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium and finishes on the Promenade in front of the Sun Coast Casino. We can’t wait to witness thousands of runners proudly wearing their stunning, red event t-shirts as they #RunForDurban. It’s going to be a day to remember.” Spearheading the men’s race will be Uganda’s Isaac Kibet who is the fastest in the field with a best of 27:41 run in Lille, France in 2021. In March this year Kibet scorched to a 60:20 over the Half Marathon, also in Lille. Clearly the 26-year-old is in the shape of his life and will have a big bullseye on his back come race day. Kibet is unperturbed. “I want to come there to run my PB and am really grateful for the invitation extended to me by the organisers.” Compatriot, Abel Sikowo is another sub 28min athlete, boasting a best of 27:58 run in Cannes in March this year. Both Sikowo and Kibet are acutely aware of the SA All Comers Record of 27:16 set by countryman, Olympic and World Champion and World Record Holder, Joshua Cheptegei at the 2018 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K and would love nothing better than to lower that time. All this points to a fast and furious race upfront come Sunday 10 July. The Ugandans will face tough competition from Kenya’s Isaac Kipkemboi (second at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in May this year) who boasts a 10km best of 28:04. Leading the South …

Showdown looming in the Women’s Field at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K
Glenrose Xaba and Kesa Molotsane are the latest top names in the women’s field to confirm their entry into the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on Sunday 10 July. These athletes join an already impressive list of runners that include Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba and Mahlet Alemu Mulugeta, Kenya’s Jesca Chelangat and South Africa’s Gerda Steyn. “The women’s race will be exceptional, and we believe we have been able to put together the strongest ever women’s 10km field in Africa,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “To have a sub 31min 10km athlete (Jesca Chelangat – 30:48; Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K 2022), a multiple world record holder who just narrowly missed out on running sub 31 over 10km (Genzebe Dibaba – four world records, former World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist) and South Africa’s best who are all coming into incredible form is amazing for the series and for South Africa. We are guaranteed to witness unbelievable racing come Sunday 10 July. We are very excited to have such a strong field of local and international athletes #RunForDurban.” Xaba is in scintillating form after recently setting a new Personal Best in the 5000m, clocking 15:25.92, in Belgium, to improve her previous best by 13sec. She is in excellent shape, coasting to a best of 32:45 in the 2019 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, a time which is very likely to improve substantially come Sunday. Kesa Molotsane, known for exceptional consistency, finished 3rd at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in October 2021 to run her PB of 32:51 and although the route is not the same, she does like to run in Durban and has posted some of the best times of her career in eThekwini over the years. Also running is Lesotho’s National Record Holder over 10 000m, Half Marathon, Marathon, and Olympian, Neheng Khatala, and an already incredible women’s field that features four-time World Record Holder, Olympic Silver Medalist and …

Kibet the latest sub 28min athlete to enter Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K
The Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K will boast one of the deepest ever assembled men’s fields over 10km in South Africa, with Uganda’s Isaac Kibet confirming that he is the latest athlete with a sub 28min 10km behind his name to make the journey to eThekweni on Sunday 10 July 2022. “We are really excited about Isaac (Kibet) coming to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2022,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “Daniel Ebenyo coming to Cape Town, along with the legendary, Genzebe Dibaba, shows just how much of an impact the Series is beginning to have on the international circuit. With Isaac now coming to Durban the race is stacked with talented athletes (both in the men’s and women’s races) that are ready to #RunForDurban. We cannot wait to watch the race unfold on Sunday.” Kibet is the latest in a long line of Ugandan athletes that are taking the road running scene by storm and challenging the traditional powerhouses of Kenya and Ethiopia. It was Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei in this very race in 2018 who set the SA All Comers Record of 27:16 and Kibet will have his eyes firmly set on that target. “I want to thank the race organisers for the invitation. I wanted to come here to run fast like other athletes did in the past. I have trained well, and I am ready to improve my 10k PB.” Kibet’s PB is a lightning fast 27:41 run in Lille, France on 6 November 2021 and makes him the fastest in the field. Kibet looking to improve on his 27:41 is a statement to take seriously after his 60:20 Half Marathon in March this year, also in Lille. That came a month after running 60:32 in Doha at the famous RAK Half Marathon. Kibet in the last two years has come a long way, improving his 10km PB from 28:59 in 2019 to 28:01 in September 2021 (he did not race in 2020) and then down to 27:41 in November 2021. But possibly a greater indication of how dangerous and fast Kibet can be is the massive 4minute improvement …
