Ellen Pakkies on stage in Kirkwood for first time
A gripping portrayal of a mother who killed her Tik-addicted son will be seen on stage for the first time at the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, brought to you in association with DStv. The true story of Ellen Pakkies, a mother from Lavender Hill outside Cape Town, made international headlines, and is the subject of two doctoral studies. My naam / my name is Ellen Pakkies stars Vinette Ebrahim – also known as Charmaine Meinties in 7de Laan, while her son is played by another 7de Laan actor Christo Davids (Errol Pieterse in the soapie). They were approached by writer and director Lizz Meiring, who was inspired to capture the anguish that mothers like Ellen Pakkies go through when their children are enslaved by drugs after watching a documentary on the case on television. “What drives a woman so far that she murders her own son, a Tik addict? And, if that happens, how do you forgive yourself,” are two of the questions Meiring asked herself. She was given permission to stage the play by Ellen Pakkies, who was given a suspended three-year sentence for the murder. Meiring believes that Ellen’s story is not unique. “Hundreds of mothers have spoken about how Tik has destroyed the lives of their children. It is a universal problem, which is not only found on the Cape Flats,” she says. My naam / My name is Ellen Pakkies is being staged in the Kirkwood NG Church hall on Saturday, June 30. Tickets are R100, and no under 16s are allowed. Tickets are available from the Kirkwood Festival office, telephone 042 2300066.
