Happy Sindane laid to rest in style Bataung donates a memorial tombstone worth R70 000 for Happy Sindane, The initial stone was supposed to be for R30 000 but the Life happy lived deserved a better send off and the CEo Lebohang Khitsane raised the stakes and decided that the gift has to be bigger, more stylish and of a new design. It took almost a day to manufacture the new tombstone in our Katlehong factory in the east of Johannesburg, the pressure was on since the family approval was only received on Thursday afternoon. Our deadline was tight, the team worked overtime to ensure that the tombstone was installed before the 10am funeral in Tweefontein cemetery in Mpumalanga on Saturday 6th April 2013. The tragedy of happy Sindane has truly touched the Bataung Memorials family and we will be donating a tombstone free of charge to the Sindane family. This is a tragedy for the Sindane family, in their time of mourning our prayers are with them. Lebohang Khitsane owner and founder said “This our little way as Bataung Memorial of trying to ease the pain of the family and console them with a dignified memorial tombstone to remember Happy by.” Contact details: Lebohang Khitsane 083 522 1931 sales@bataungmemorials.co.za URL: https://www.bataungmemorials.co.za Twitter: https://twitter.com/iksouthafrica Facebook: YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/MrMukansi11 Author: lebo mukansi from Inventors Kitchen Brand Strategy Agency. The final audited amount was recently announced at a roadshow function at the Jaipur Palace in Durban to honour Casual Day’s top performers in KZN. Our fundraising model is a collective effort that shows that if everyone does something small, it has a huge impact.” APD KZN was one of 300 energetic and dedicated organisations whose fundraisers have brought in over R170 million over the past 18 years. Casual Day is the flagship project of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities (NCPPDSA), an NPO mandated to improve education, inclusivity, accessibility and social integration for persons with disabilities. Creative practice in public space explored at Thinking the City
The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) partners with the Public Culture CityLab (African Centre for Cities, UCT) on Thinking the City, from 12-15 March 2013. This series of talks and discussions seeks to strengthen thinking and practice at the intersection of culture and public space, particularly in Cape Town. These sessions will take place at the Infecting the City Festival Centre (6 Spin Street) from 10:30 – 12:00 daily, from 12-15 March 2013, and are presented as part of the Africa Centre’s annual Infecting the City Public Art Festival. Cape Town has a long history of public art and culture, and has more recently embraced the notion of a ‘creative city’. This is an exciting prospect for creative practitioners, yet the question of ‘creative city for whom?’ keeps bubbling to the surface of public debate, as different interest groups lay claim to the creative expression in, and of, public space. Thinking the City will contribute to the Infecting the City programme by unpacking a series of examples and contested territories related to cultural practice in the city, in order to foster a more critical dialogue about creative practice in public space. It will comprise four presentation and discussion sessions. Led by Public Culture CityLab co-convenor, Rike Sitas, and Oddveig Nicole Sarmiento (Centre for African Studies); the opening session Public space, festivalisation and contested cultural expression will take place on Tuesday 12 March. It aims to unpack questions of cultural expression in the increasingly prevalent phenomenon of public events and festivals. The Kaapse Klopse Minstrel Carnival in Cape Town is simultaneously the most popular and one of the most critiqued public space events in Cape Town. Discussing this case in the context of Infecting the City, the speakers raise questions about the problematic popular culture vs ‘high’ art binary, asking us to rethink cultural claims to expression and knowledge production in the …

24 underprivileged boys pledge to run to raise funds for children fighting life-threatening conditions.
The Gift of the Giver Marathon, Eldorado Park 24th of February 2013 A group of 24 underprivileged boys from Kersiedorp, Eldorado Park, have pledged to raise money for children fighting life-threatening conditions, setting aside their own impoverished conditions to run in the Gift of the Giver Marathon to raise funds for the Reach for a Dream Foundation. The boys are part of Growing Champions, a project that works on growing leadership and character development in young men whose communities face gang violence and drug infestation through life skills development and soccer training. Growing Champions personal development coach, Samantha Toweel-Moore, posed a challenge to impoverished children of Kersiedorp. She asked them if they would use their gift of health to help those who lack this gift have their dreams come true. Twenty three courageous boys rose to the challenge. "These boys are not sitting back waiting for others to help them, they are getting out there and helping themselves. They are a brotherhood whose fighting spirit has led to some of their own dreams coming true, on the football field. Now they are giving back. They know they can make a difference by taking action. They have pledged to train to run a 10km road race to raise funds for Reach for a Dream. The race is aptly called, The Gift of the Giver Township Marathon. It takes place in Eldorado Park on the 24th of February 2013. "They want to fund 'dreams come true' for children who share their passion for football but are fighting life threatening conditions. Their hard work, dedication, compassion and teamwork are testament to their spirit of champions, says Toweel-Moore. Coach Toweel-Moore says, "I am so moved by the courage of these young men, South Africa's future leaders, as their coach I will run the 42.2km race to stretch myself too. Life throws many curve balls but when you learn to accept the challenge rather than run from it, you find your greatness." Samantha's father, …
