Going through the motions not for Ntsila
The 23-year-old, who was judged the best player on the field in the team's recent FNB Varsity Cup loss against Maties, said he strived to play his rugby with a sense of urgency. "From a personal perspective, I want to keep on delivering," said the loose forward, who is studying towards a degree in game ranch management. Speaking in the aftermath of a below-par start to their Varsity Cup campaign, he said that if the team wanted to move forward they needed to improve their focus and attitude. "I've learnt that we should put away teams in the first few minutes and make sure we don't give them a chance to come back in the game." He said it was important for the team not to just go through the motions and to keep fighting. "I think we have made things tough for ourselves by playing catch-up rugby. Having to come from behind definitely does not guarantee victories." Ntsila said his role in the team was to help maintain defensive lines and possession and, perhaps typical of his personality, he felt that he could improve. He said he always knew he wanted to play rugby but that acquiring a good education was equally important. "I always make sure I work hard by fully committing myself at training and dedicating sufficient time to my studies," said Ntsila, who is currently a third-year student at NMMU's George campus. Before he settles into a career after rugby, he said his goal was to stampede his way into the Bok team. However, his mind is on more pressing issues. "It is now important to get back on our feet in this Varsity Cup tournament." CLICK HERE to submit your press release to MyPR.co.za. …

Madibaz travel to Shimlas with a winning mindset
Charles Ward of Madibaz in action during the FNB Varsity Cup second-round encounter against Maties. Saspa After two heartbreaking losses, FNB NMMU-Madibaz are targeting an away win against the in-form Shimlas in the third round of the FNB Varsity Cup on Monday evening. "We are going to Shimlas to win," said Madibaz head coach David Maidza. "We owe it to ourselves to cut down on unforced errors and turn the pressure we created in both matches into points. This was the real difference between winning and losing." Maidza said their nervous start against Maties contributed largely to the result. "In any competitive game you cannot play catch-up. We need to start asserting ourselves by controlling the ball better and becoming more patient and composed when we have the ball. "I am lucky to have a group of hungry and dedicated boys that know the importance of getting back on track and my work is to keep on assisting each one to realise his potential." He said he believed that they had gone into the first two games with the right game plan, but that their execution had not been precise. "We all know that improvements have to be made and that is why we have worked hard this week to prepare for Shimlas." Maidza said their indifferent start to the tournament had not changed their focus. "We had a good look at the game against Maties and, apart from us starting poorly, we feel that we don't need to hit the panic button. "I am more than confident that we have a core group of diligent student-athletes that can turn the results around." He said they needed to keep on improving on their focus areas through hard, intelligent work. Although these were early days, Maidza said they knew they had to start winning to be in contention for the play-offs. "The boys have been positive and the disappointment from Monday is being left behind. The next big job lies ahead." He said lock Jayson Reinecke would miss the match due to a concussion sustained during the Maties …

Van der Burgh ready to mingle at River Mile
South African swimming icon Cameron van der Burgh will be mingling with participants and spectators at the SPAR River Mile this weekend. Photo: Gameplan Media Olympic gold medallist Cameron van der Burgh will take a day off from his Rio preparation to visit the SPAR River Mile Festival on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth this weekend. Van der Burgh, who won the 100m breaststroke in a world record time at the London Olympics, said he would mingle with entrants and spectators at the 92nd River Mile, which takes place at Cannonville on the Sundays River tomorrow and Sunday. “Sunday is my day off and I am looking forward to attend this historic open-water swimming event,” said the 27-year-old. “Events of this nature play a pivotal role in swimming development and in promoting an active and healthy lifestyle in a fun way. Race director Michael Zoetmulder, of Zsports, said they were thrilled to welcome Van der Burgh to Africa’s oldest open-water swimming event. “He is a great role model for young and old and people will get the opportunity to talk to him and to be inspired by his remarkable knowledge and achievements.” Van der Burgh, a veteran of two Olympic Games and a two-time overall winner of the Fina World Cup, said he had his sights set on a repeat performance in Rio this August. “London was undoubtedly the highlight of my swimming career. It doesn’t get much better than that.” The South African swimming icon said he first took the water as a kid to combat his attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity (ADHD). “My mother suggested swimming as a means to help me get rid of my pent-up energy and it has worked wonders.” He said giving his all in the pool bettered his ability to focus in other areas of life, which included his part-time financial management studies through Unisa. “I want to keep swimming at the top level until after the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. By then I’ll be 32 and probably have to start looking at getting a real job.” After his visit to …

Sovereign Foods extends helping hand
Uitenhage-based poultry producer donates over R200,000 to community programmes in Nelson Mandela Bay and this includes assistance with the tuition of two university students in 2016. KwaNobuhle-based Lukhanyiso Child and Youth Care Centre, is one of the proud recipients of a funding injection from integrated poultry producer Sovereign Foods. The care centre is a safe haven for 50 orphans and vulnerable youth, aged 3 to 17 years, who come from dysfunctional households. The R36,200 donation received at yesterday’s handover in Uitenhage, will be used to construct a boundary wall. Pumla Bucwa who heads up the care centre’s operations explained that “without a boundary wall, it was an additional obstacle for being eligible to register as a non-profit organisation (NPO) with the South African Social Services Agency.” “Now with funding for the boundary wall secured, we can focus on other prerequisites for becoming a registered NPO,” Bucwa said. Another beneficiary of the company’s corporate social investment programme is Joe Slovo-based community crèche, Zoey’s Little Lamp. The crèche, provides day care and educational support to over 90 children from ages 2 to 6 years. The R30,000 donation was a welcome boost for the crèche which has a long standing relationship with the company, having received support from Sovereign Foods since 2004 for the upkeep of the crèche’s premises and continues to receive weekly supply of chicken products. “The donation will be used to increase teacher salaries and also fund the maintenance of the premises”, said an elated Allen Verreynn, Zoey’s Little Lamp Coordinator. “This additional funding proves that they [the company] are committed to the upliftment of our community,” he added. In addition to supporting community programmes, Sovereign Foods is also helping two students from KwaNobuhle with tuition fees and accommodation costs in 2016. As such, Sonwabile Klaas was the fortunate matriculant from the class of 2015 who …

River Mile champ underdone but hopeful
A slightly underdone Daniel Jones is hoping to defend both of his titles at the SPAR River Mile Festival at Cannonville outside Port Elizabeth this weekend. “My form isn’t as good as it should be,” said Jones, who ranks last year’s wins in the double mile and mile alongside his runner-up position in the Jendamark Bell Buoy Challenge as career highlights. “I'm not as fit as I was last year because I haven't been training as much as I should. But I still have a few days to get back into it.” The 18-year-old from PE said that although he would love to claim the titles again, it was all up to what happened on race day. “There are a lot of other strong swimmers wanting to get their hands on that trophy.” He said his toughest challenge would “probably” come from Aquabear’s Ian Venter, who beat him comfortably in last weekend’s Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics open-water race over 5km on the Settlers Dam in Grahamstown. “He's really swimming well at the moment – both in the pool and in open water. He's definitely the man to watch.” Last year Jones, who swims for Bay Eagles, had a good start in the feature event and led from start to finish. “I just increased my pace towards the end.” His motivation for competing in the double mile the day before was however nothing about prestige and all about sibling rivalry. “I went in just to beat my brothers and by doing that I won. “The real surprise was the following day’s River Mile. It was my goal to win, but I never expected it.” Jones, who concentrates on the 200m backstroke in the pool, played his cards close to his chest and said he would only decide on his race strategy the day before or even on the day itself. In the women’s races, 16-year-old Pearson pupil Hannah Haswell will also be aiming to reclaim her titles. “I've been training hard and I've put the time and the effort in, so I'm just hoping that I'll be able to reflect this on the day. “Overall, I just want to defend my titles.” The …

Game-changing retail technology piloted at Baywest Mall
(Port Elizabeth) – New technology being piloted at Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth sees stores able to communicate tailored deals to customers with smartphones as they walk the mall, at the same time giving retailers key insights into shopper behaviour. Stellenbosch-based Skybird Technologies (Pty) Ltd has launched an integrated software platform called ONE, which makes use of specialised Gimbal proximity beacons. In a first for South Africa, this specialised beacon technology is used via a downloadable app which shoppers can use to locate special offers and sales involving their favourite brands. Some 300 Gimbal proximity beacons have been deployed throughout Baywest Mall. In turn, the technology learns shopper preferences over time and also makes key information available to retailers, helping them understand customer behaviour – from dwell time in store, time spent in various parts of the store, and what percentage of app users end up buying products, known as the conversion ratio. The technology is already used at major global events such as the US Open golf tournament, the Super Bowl, and also at Apple stores in the US. According to Skybird director Kyle Porter, SA retailers have until now only been able to gather such key customer insights by unpacking information from loyalty programmes, measuring shoppers through foot-counters, data from the parking pay stations, and also from Wi-Fi. The platform being piloted at Baywest Mall could be tailored to handle other aspects of the shopping and retail experience, said Porter. “This technology is going to be a game-changer for SA retail,” said Porter. “Already major national brands are very excited about being able to interact directly with their customers, rather than wait for their customers to touch base with them online or via social media. “And the ability to know that I’m in your store before getting to your till opens up many possibilities to engage, up-sell and enhance my experience with a …
