The Algoa Bay Yacht Club has voiced it's opposition to the proposed Algoa Bay Fish Farm and submitted an appeal. The proposed site is inshore of the Shipping zone and offshore of Port Elizabeth's beaches placing it in the path of many of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club's sailing regattas. ABYC exists to foster sailing as a sport. The local, provincial, national and international events that ABYC host bring many tourists to the region, city, port and club - all hosted by volunteer club members eager to promote the sport. Media coverage for a National event such as the Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals - which ran for four years offshore of Hobie Beach - was shown to be worth in excess of R420 000 per year for the event. International media coverage for an event such as the 60th SAP 505 World Championships to be held in Algoa Bay from 23 March to 3 April 2015, will easily exceed R3 million - valuable exposure for the club, the Port of Port Elizabeth and Nelson Mandela Bay. Tourism SA uses a figure of R1 350.00 spend per tourist per day - for 320 visitors ONLY to the 505 World Championships over 14 days that will represent a conservative boost to the city coffers of R6 048 000. Add the bed nights for around 250 international sailors at a conservative R500.00 per night for 13 nights and we add R1 625 000 to the expected spend. Add the expected spend by local sailors at the 505 SAP World Championships plus the expected spend by sailors in the Vasco Da Gamma Ocean Race from Durban to Port Elizabeth and we can conservatively expect another R1.5 Million in spend in Port Elizabeth. From one international sailing event, one offshore race, the annual ABYC Sailing Week and the many local sailing regattas the sport of sailing alone is expected to contribute in excess of R9.2 Million in turnover from tourism in Port Elizabeth during 2015. As a consequence ABYC is a valuable partner to all the tourist orientated business in our city. An ongoing youth development …
Magnificent Sailing Season Opening Cruise
The Port Elizabeth based Algoa Bay Yacht Club held their annual opening of the sailing season sailpast on Sunday 14 September 2014. Hobie Beach swimmers and Shark Rock Pier strollers were presented with the pleasant sight of gaily decorated ocean going yachts, speedy sport boats and dinghies taking the salute from the President and Commodore of the ABYC just off of Shark Rock Pier at 1:00 pm. The Windguru had predicted a warm, overcast day with a light East - perfect weather for a sailpast and even more perfect for a first time sail out of the Port of Port Elizabeth onto the big ocean by young dinghy sailors who had never done so before. As Sunday drew closer more and more youngsters put their hands up eager to sail on the big ocean. On Sunday morning at 10h00 the ABYC carpark in the Port was already filling up and dinghy sails were visible. Shepherded by three support boats manned by ABYC members, Ronnie Baer, John Tudehope, Gordon van Zyl and their eager crews the dinghy fleet began to leave the Port of Port Elizabeth at 11h00 - destination Shark Rock Pier and a couple of hours of fun coupled with a huge sense of achievement with the bonus of adequate heroic stories for the coming school week. Gaily decorated yachts began leaving the moorings - Harry Lamprecht's, Lady, must come in for special mention as she was expertly decorated with flags, flags and more flags. The Algoa Bay Yacht Club were celebrating the start of what will be an awesome sailing season with two major high profile international events - the 505 World Championships and the Vasco Da Gamma Race - coming to Port Elizabeth in 2015. The 505 World Championships will bring an estimated 250 sailors to Port Elizabeth for two weeks. Close to 200 of those will be international sailors experiencing the warmth and hospitality of Nelson Mandela Bay and her citizens for the first time. The Vasco da Gamma race marks, for the next 3 years, the return of South Africa's oldest ocean race to Port …

Port Elizabeth’s top 18 businesswomen attended a gala dinner to see who would take top honours in their respective categories. One woman from each of six categories received an award for their outstanding contribution and achievement in their various business sectors. The awards aim to applaud businesswomen who have made significant contributions to the economy and also to create role models for other women within the community to look up to and be empowered. “I’m so honoured to have received this award, especially considering the calibre of businesswomen who were represented at this prestigious event. Each and every one of them have truly been role models for other women within the business world and have achieved remarkable results in their respective industries,” said an elated Potgieter. “This would not have been possible if was not for my faith and amazing supportive family, who are a constant source of encouragement.” As a business owner and real estate professional, Potgieter has successfully negotiated some of the most challenging economic times in modern ages, flouting industry norms and succeeding where many other real estate agencies have not. PE’s famous wind abandons sailors
The Port Elizabeth based, Algoa Bay Yacht Club sails it's annual prestige regatta - ABYC Week - annually before the close of the sailing season. Traditionally the regatta has been one that offers mixed sailing conditions, keen competition and loads of laughs. In this year's regatta it was the idyllic windless conditions over four days that had the most laughs, though. Held over four days from 1 to 4 May 2014, the 'racing' was frustrating for sailors used to high winds and seat of your pants, hold on for survival racing. For the first time in living memory not one race sailed during ABYC Week was sailed over the full courses set. Of the six started races, Race Officer Ronnie Baer was forced to abandon two and shorten the course sailed of the remaining four. To compound frustration for the sailors even more the first race saw only one finisher - Jellybaby (Andrew Ward) - as the rest of the competitors failed to complete the course within 20 minutes of Jellybaby finishing, despite many of them being as close as 200 metres behind. With only two races sailed in the first three days of the regatta, sailors anxiously eyed the weather for the last day of the regatta, Sunday 4 May. A mixed bag of forecasts saw some sailors reefing down and preparing for an expected 12 midday forecast of "30 knots west, gusting 39 knots" whilst others defied the weather gods and sailed out of the Port Elizabeth harbour with full sails and light weather gear. Difficulties with a swinging wind led to a number of 180 degree course changes before the first race got underway at 10:16 am in a steady North West of 9 knots - a positive gale compared to the previous 3 days. The fleet managed to complete one sausage only to have the race shortened on the first reach of the triangle as the wind died. The fleets started the second race of the day at 11:15 and, once again the race had to be shortened ahead of a massive 180 degree wind shift to the east. Fleet 2 finished their course on a …

Successful first day for World First Sailing Event
Port Elizabeth's North End Lake was the venue for a sailing World First on Saturday 26 April 2014 when 37 sailing dinghies took to the water for the very first ever interclub sailing regatta to be held on this inner city lake in the shadow of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium with sailing taking place along the shores of industry and the suburb of Sydenham. A South West wind over the kidney shaped lake presented an interesting course setting conundrum for Race Officer, Ronnie Baer who settled for a four mark course with a short beat from the Stadium side up to the Coca Cola Factory, followed by a short downwind run, a reach along the Sydenham shore past the Zports offices, another beat up to the mark off of Aspen followed by a long run down to the bottom mark off of the stadium. A rinse and repeat and the fleet finished the 40 minute course. Two races were sailed and the fleet sent home before the rising wind topped 30 knots on the water with a few capsizes leading to excitement on the water as rescue boats stood by sailors. Before the first race started Nelson Mandela Bay Councillor, Marion Harning presented Algoa Bay Yacht Club Member, Georgou Divaris, with his South African Sailing Colours which he was awarded for a number of significant sailing achievements - Georgou won the Laser 4.7 National Sailing Championships, he took the Gold Medal at the RS Tera World Championships and he achieved a Bronze Medal at the African Optimist Sailing Championships. Divaris, who is resident in Knysna and coached by Algoa Bay Yacht Club's, Ronnie Baer, also recently won the School Sportsman of the Year 2013 award presented by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). Councillor Harning handed Divaris his SAS Colours at the race headquarters situated in the EP Powerboat Club, Prince Alfred Road, on the shores of North End Lake. Sailing conditions on the lake present some interesting challenges with the surrounding industry creating very non …

Plettenberg Bay Duo Clinch Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals Title
4 days of sailing and 9 races later Blaine and Roxanne Dodds sailing for Knysna Yacht Club finally clinched the 2014 Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals - a title that has eluded them for the last three years of keen competition in Algoa Bay. The three days of sailing presented a range of conditions but Port Elizabeth saved the best for last. A mid morning start for bridge and officials saw the support team dotted around the still bay in the windless conditions whilst the fleet waited for the call for the final race which came at 1:30 pm as the promised South South East made it's appearance over Cape Receife and settled into 9 to 10 knots. An over eager start saw the dreaded Black Flag being raised for the restart and the slow jostle for the line began - two boats were adjudged over at the start; Andrew and Angela Ward from Algoa Bay Yacht Club and David and Rebecca Scott from the Dar Es Salaam Yacht Club earning them an OCS and maximum points of 31 points each. The Dodds pair sailed a faultless and conservative race - getting ahead of the second placed William and Lucinda Edwards and covering them the whole course. Belinda and Ryan Hayward slipped in between the Edwards' and Dodds' boat to gain second place and a clear winner was apparent with Blaine and Roxanne finishing the regatta on 13 points with the Edwards' 2 points behind and the Haywards' trailing a further 20 points behind in third place. The top Port Elizabeth based boat finished in 4th place sailed by Robert Archibald and daughter Alexa. Despite two OCS' Andrew and Angela Ward sailed to 7th place in the 30 boat fleet. The top three finishers overall: Blaine and Roxanne Dodds - Knysna Yacht Club on 13 points William and Lucinda Edwards - Knysna Yacht Club on 15 points Belinda and Ryan Hayward - Fish Hoek Beach Sailing Club on 35 points.
