Johannesburg, May, 02, 2018 Tetra Pak to develop paper straws for its portion-size carton packages: Tetra Pak aims to launch a paper straw suitable for its portion-sized carton packages before the end of the year, as part of a broader programme to help address the issue of plastic straw waste. Straws play an integral role for portion packages that must be consumed on-the-go but they are also a part of the plastics waste problem. Tetra Pak has been working to encourage consumers to push straws back in the pack once they have consumed the contents so they can be collected along with the rest of the package. Now work is under way to develop a paper straw that is suitable for use on its portion-size carton packages. “It sounds simple enough,” says Charles Brand, Executive VP, Product Management & Commercial Operations, “but in reality there are a number of significant challenges to producing a paper straw with the required properties.” “That said, our development team is confident they can find a solution, and that we’ll have a paper straw alternative ready to launch by the end of the year.” Tetra Pak packages are, on average, 75% paperboard. Paper straws would be another important step towards the company’s long-term ambition of offering a completely renewable portfolio. Multi Award Winner Skhumba Hlophe to Host This Year’s Savanna Newcomer Showcase
What started out as an intimate showcase to give up-and-coming comedians five minutes in the spotlight, has evolved into an extraordinary nugget of something quite unique, something magical, something unmistakably South African. Now in its 6th year, this special little get together at The Soweto Theatre has exploded into an unmissable afternoon of mingling with the who’s who on the social scene whilst grooving to Sunday afternoon tunes. Add chilled Savanna ciders, Kaya FM DJ’s and the aroma of a delicious shisa nyama and you’ll start to get a feel for just how vibey the afternoon really is. This all takes place in the theatre’s outdoor precinct before the showcase at 2:30pm and is included in your ticket. The real entertainment starts at 4:30pm when 24 newcomers from across the country get their first experience performing in an actual theatre instead of at their local comedy club. As the first of a series of events produced by The Annual South African Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards, The Savanna Newcomer Showcase is attended by many in the comedy industry who come out to see who they should vote for in the newcomer category for the awards, taking place later on this year. Expect to be astounded, astonished, surprised; 90% hilarious and 10% cringe-worthy, every year brings new, raw talent to this exciting stage. Anchoring this year’s show is Skhumba Hlophe, the 2017 winner of the Savanna Comic of the Year Award and the winner of the Flying Solo Award for two years running. Also known as ‘The Big Banger’, Skhumba’s not only a hugely popular DJ on Kaya FM (which is a result of him performing at the awards a few years back), but he’s also the one and only ‘Dlamini’ from the feature film Taxi Ride and its spin-off series of the same name. Skhumba will give each of the comedians five minutes to show the packed theatre what they’re made of before buzzing them off and bringing the next newcomer on. “Whilst predominantly attended by the entertainment …

Johannesburg, April, 11, 2018: Free up your time for what’s good in life - by Penny Ntuli, marketing director of Tetra Pak South Africa Have you ever sat down at the end of the week, and realised you just couldn’t find the time to do all the things you set out to do? Juggling work, household chores, reading and exercise all in one day can sometimes seem impossible. We all want a better quality of life so we must focus on what’s good. That consumer drive is why companies constantly look for and find ways to make peoples’ lives easier. Even something as small as a milk box can often save you time and make life convenient. It can give you drinks on the go as you zoom around trying to fit in the million and one things that need to be done. Here are 10 tips and tricks to free up your time for what’s good in life: Take a step back The first and most crucial step is to take a step back and look at what’s good in your life and what could be better. You can ask yourself what you want to do more of or what you want to change. Stepping back helps you prioritise what’s important and what’s not so you can find the time to do the things you want. Create your perfect formula for a daily routine Now it’s time to organise. Organising a list of tasks helps you achieve balance by ensuring things get done when they need to without eating up too much of your time. Daily chores can leave you exhausted and with little time to enjoy the weekend. Organising your time at the start of each week with a to-do list helps you plan to save. There are a bunch of mobile apps that can help you and many of them are free. Do a little bit everyday Benjamin Franklin once said, “Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” But don’t cram too much into one day and leave yourself exhausted. 7 Ways You Can be a Green Hero
Johannesburg - 03/16/2018. 7 ways you can be a green hero. By Penny Ntuli, communications director of Tetra Pak South Africa It seems nowadays everyone is talking about climate change and how important it is to protect the environment. But what can we actually do about it? Governments and businesses focus on long term, sustainable solutions but it’s not just their job to save the environment that we all rely on. We all live on planet Earth and it’s our job to help protect it for our children and their children. That’s why our packaging containers use only natural, renewable, and recyclable resources to help leave future generations a clean and safe environment. Businesses like ours, and governments, can make a really big impact in making the world a better place for all but it’s everyone’s mission to contribute. Here are seven small ways you can actively take part to help make a big difference: Contribute to the recycling movement Probably the easiest way to help is to recycle – it’s the commonest environment friendly action that people perform. It means you can avoid overusing valuable natural resources and start separating garbage by putting aside carton packages for recycling. Check your labels Many companies like ours try to make going green a viable option for you by using products made from natural, renewable, and recyclable resources. We let you know by marking the product packaging so that all you have to do is check the package when you’re at the supermarket. Look for the sign that it’s made from easily bio-degradable materials or to see if they originate from forests that are managed in sustainable ways that protect trees for the future. We mark this with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) label. It’s proof that the product you are buying is made using wood from responsible sources. Turn off your lights and taps when not in use It’s super easy – and super effective – to make sure your lights are off when you leave a …

Understanding Non 12-Step Drug and Alcohol Recovery Treatment
Cape Town, December, 7, 2017: Addiction and other self-destructive behaviours have a devastating effect on both the addict and their loved ones. Making the choice to book into a rehab facility and getting the necessary support and psychological help is paramount to long-term recovery and relapse prevention. But the treatment program chosen is just as important. Treatment for substance abuse and process-addictions is a complex matter that goes far beyond simply the abuse of drugs, alcohol, gambling and other vices. Treatment plans need to cater to the individual. There are countless rehab options available, so it is understandable to feel overwhelmed. Increasing there is a large group of professionals who support alternative recovery options to 12-Steps. When faced with the choice to opt for an alternative non-traditional program or traditional 12-Step program, what are the major benefits of opting for the newer, alternative treatment? The 12-Step Program and the Minnesota Model The 12-Step program was used in conjunction with the Minnesota Model which advocates complete abstinence from all mind-altering substances. 12-Step programs function more as peer support groups and self-help organisations. However, in a primary care facility, there are also a number of counsellors and other medical staff on hand to assist with detox and provide individualised care. Most rehabs and recovery centres use this model and for many people suffering from addiction the program has helped them enjoy a happy, productive, sober life. However, this program has had varying degrees of success, which has led to a number of patients seeking alternative treatments. One of the keystones vested in the 12-Step program postulates that alcoholism and addiction are a disease. 12-Step’s sees the dependence on drugs or alcohol as the ‘primary problem’. Non 12-Step programs sees recovery in a different light. Dependence certainly plays a major role in treating addiction but …

More than 5,6m South Africans see Milk offers Hope for Change
Tetra Pak’s annual Milk for Change campaign to raise awareness of the nutritional benefits of long life milk and donate portions of long life milk to children in underprivileged communities in partnership with non-profit Feed SA has already exceeded expectations as the campaign heads into its final 10 days. Milk for Change has already reached an audience of 5,66 million South Africans and delivered 140 000 servings as the push via the SMS line (“Milk for Change” to 40380) and i-Pay (via milkforchange.co.za) reaches its climax. “We raised 35 000 litres of long life milk,” says Liesl Gruber, marketing director at Tetra Pak South Africa. “And this campaign has already shown me that South Africans are a can-do nation. While the world and our own country are beset by technology-driven business disruption and economic uncertainty, ordinary people are getting on with looking after one another where it matters. We’re proud to be playing a role in making a better future a reality for all South Africans, starting with the children.” Milk for Change announced its intermediate success at an event in Alexandra to hand over collected milk to Feed SA on August 8, 2017. Genevieve Nathan, director of FEED SA, says: “As a non-profit, we cannot survive without the help of communities and corporates that help us get the tens of thousands of rands per month we need to give our kids the most important meal of the day – breakfast. We know that children cannot achieve their full academic potential, the key to their future success, without a nutritional, balanced breakfast, the most important meal of the day, which is why #MilkForChange resonates so strongly with our own vision. It is not easy growing up in Alexandra or being one of the nine million South Africans who don’t get the food they need each day, but with the long life milk from the #MilkForChange campaign we can make sure it’s not quite so hard.” Tetra Pak South Africa MD, John Strömblad, says: “Milk for Change is …
