Lesotho National and SA All-Comers Records in sight as Mofolo and Chelangat enter Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K
Following a strong start to the year, Kamohelo Mofolo is confident he’s ready to deliver the fastest 10km performance in Lesotho’s history when he lines up for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on Sunday, 13 July 2025. In the women’s race, former champion Jesca Chelangat of Kenya is in peak form and will be aiming to break the SA All-Comers Record on her return to Durban. Mofolo is reaping the rewards of a strong 2025 season, having improved his personal best at both the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K (28:11) and the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K (27:53). Reflecting on his runner-up finish in ‘The Mother City’ on 11 May, Mofolo believes he is now poised to surpass Namakoe Nkhasi’s 27:52 and become the fastest 10km runner in The Mountain Kingdom’s history. “The race was enjoyable and I’m happy with my second place finish. Running my first 27 minute 10km makes me happy because this has been the plan that coach and I put in place for this year. I can break that national record and I feel that I can even run inside 27:50. That’s what I’ve been planning,” says a confident Mofolo. Making a comeback to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES for the first time since 2022 is Jesca Chelangat. Two months after finishing ahead of multiple World Record holder Genzebe Dibaba at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K, the 27-year-old Kenyan announced herself to the global running public with a memorable victory at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K where she clocked 30:41 to set a new SA All-Comers record. “l enjoyed racing in Durban because people along the course really cheered for us a lot. The Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES motivated me to believe in myself, believing that I can do even better and it also gave me confidence to race against a strong field,” admits the Kenyan. Chelangat used that breakthrough performance as a springboard to international success. In July, she will return to the City of eThekwini with a personal best of 30:01 - making her one of the 25 fastest …

Mokoka targets masters 10km World Record at Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K
Inspired by Bernard Lagat’s legendary feats a decade ago, Stephen Mokoka is determined to make history as the fastest 40-year-old over 10km when he lines up for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on Sunday, 13 July 2025. “It’s a goal. The World Masters 10km record was run by Bernard Lagat in 2015 in Manchester and I was present on that day. I remember running away from him because I didn’t want to be beaten by a master. But time flies. Ten years later, I’m here. It’s my turn now,” said Mokoka reflecting on the Great Manchester Run where he produced the erstwhile SA Record of 27:38 to finish as the runner-up. To eclipse the mark set by the legendary Kenyan-turned-American, Mokoka will have to run faster than 27:48 which would be the second fastest time of his decorated twenty year career. The 40-year-old Hollywood Athletics Club top runner draws confidence from his encouraging performance at last month’s Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. The 4-time Olympian took third place in 28:06, which was the fourth fastest 10km performance of his life. “I’m doing well for now. Over the next few weeks, I aim to get stronger,” said Mokoka, who joined Hendrick Ramaala’s Zoo Lake training group for two long runs as part of his buildup to the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K. “For the past two years, I’ve been running 27:57 or 27:55, so I’m just a few seconds off that record. This time, I’ll have to dig a little deeper. I’m hoping Durban gives us good weather, like Cape Town did. Hopefully, I can break that Masters World Record, and I’m grateful to Absa and Stillwater Sports for the opportunity.” Also aiming for her best 10km performance in years is Tayla Kavanagh. After two challenging, injury-plagued seasons, the 24-year-old is beginning to show flashes of the form that earned her victory at the 2021 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in a lifetime best of 32:10. Kavanagh clocked 33:01 to finish sixth at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on 11 May and is feeling positive …

A friend of 30 years came to stay with me every weekend during my three-month chemotherapy journey. My ‘cancer sisters’ at the oncology centre became like family - we walked that path together. I consulted a nutritionist, did DNA testing to understand the root of my cancer, changed my diet, exercised mindfully, and focused on my overall wellbeing with a positive attitude. Today, I’m stronger for the journey. I thank God every day for the gift of life. I count my blessings and appreciate everything, even the smallest moments. I’m living my life to the fullest.” Williams believes in the healing power of movement and mindset: “Staying active and participating in events like the Totalsports Women’s Race has a truly positive impact. It keeps the mind sharp and helps you stay motivated. Set goals and aim for milestones. The vibe at this race is so uplifting, with an electric atmosphere. It’s always well-organised and supports such an important cause.” Diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2005, Rayghanah Cassiem was told that she only had five years to live. “I was shocked - devastated doesn’t even begin to describe it,” says Cassiem. “I had no history of cancer, breastfed …

With exercise and a positive mindset playing a vital role in his recovery, cancer survivor Rodney Reynders from Umhlanga Rocks, KZN, is excited to once again take on the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K on Sunday, 13 July 2025. In August 2022, Reynders was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer that had spread to his lungs. He was accepted into a clinical trial for immunotherapy and began treatment in September 2022. At the time of diagnosis, the tumour on his kidney measured 81mm, and there were 24 cancerous spots in his lungs, including one tumour measuring 11mm. That was 2 years and 7 months ago,” says a grateful and upbeat Reynders. “My advice to anyone facing a similar journey is to have faith, stay positive, keep moving if you can, and lean on the support of family and friends." Having made his debut at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K in 2024, Reynders describes the experience with great enthusiasm: “It’s a brilliant event and an unforgettable experience,” he exclaims. “Running through the streets of Durban, which were so clean and vibrant - hats off to the organisers!” He adds in closing: “Exercise is not only beneficial for the body but also for the mind. It has played a key role in helping me fight this disease. A cancer diagnosis is life-altering, but with the right treatment, a strong mindset, faith, and the support of loved ones, you can keep moving forward.
